Overclocking the Q8200

Hello everyone.

I was wondering what the chances are of doing a successful overclock on a Q8200 processor. With the processor sitting at 2.33Ghz stock it struggles with quite a few games I play. The main thing I am worried about is my PSU, I am not sure if it has enough power to handle an OC since I have already OC'd my GPU.

Here are my system specs:

COMPUTER:

Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.120402-0336)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Inspiron 545
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
Memory: 3326MB RAM

GRAPHICS:

Card name: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
Chip type: AMD Radeon Graphics Processor (0x6738)
DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Display Memory: 2420 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1013 MB
Shared Memory: 1407 MB
Current Mode: 1360 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz)

POWER SUPPLY:

CoolerMaster 450w

Thanks in advance. You guys have helped me a great deal before.

GPU is OC'd to 950 MHz Clock/ 1180 MHz Memory

I don't think you can overclock your Q8200 as it is in Dell OEM system, so cpu overclocking will most probably be bios locked.

I think PSU wise you are fine.

I see, Well I have seen posts where people have claimed to get it up to 3.3. Is there any way I could check to see if I can OC it?

Thanks for quick reply btw, much appreciated.

I downloaded a program called ThrottleStop by the way, looks interesting, but I am not sure how to use it.

What is the mobo?

Go into bios and try to change the FSB and multiplier value to see if bios allows it.

Its always best to overclock via Bios as software overclocking imo isn't very reliable and you could end with overvolting the cpu, if I am correct.

Ah ok, its stock mobo, its a N826N. The other thing that worried me was my temps. Idle my cpu temps are like 55c and go up to 70 underload but my MOBO temps are 40 idle and dont really go up that much under load, and thats no OC'd.

Ok.

What do you make of this video, if I am not aloud to post videos I will remove it.

Hmmm the video is fine and he seems to be using Gigabyte motherboard as MB intelligent tweaker bios option is only found in Gigabyte mobo models. You could try his settings.

However you mentioned Dell N826N mobo and it seems to be OEM mobo. Tbh I have never heard of such mobo. 2ndly the cpu cooler is most probably intel stock cooler and isn't suitable for overclocking.

3rdly you mention high idle temps and even high load temps while cpu is at stock speed. Seems to me that the thermal compound has dried up or cpu cooler isn't seated properly.

I am afraid you are restricted with regard to overclocking unless you change mobo and stock cooler :(

Ah as I expected, that fine though. I was going to start upgrading parts soon anyway. So when I got some cash within the next 2 weeks il come back on here and ask for suggestions regarding a new mobo, cooler and RAM. I have only 4gb of DDR2 so i am looking tp upgrade that to. Do you have any good suggestions for a new mobo, cooler and ram? :)

Thanks for all your help though mate. :);)

4GB DDR2 is fine. Imo you are best to get 2nd hand P45 Asus or Gigabyte mobo if you intend on staying with Q8200 for forseeable future.

Other members can give you better advice with regard to upgrade and may be you could consider selling your current setup and upgrading to Sandy/Ivy or even Haswell in future.

Iv just dragged my old pc out of the closet upstairs, it has a GA-M61PME-S2 mobo in it. Is that any good? Only 2 RAM slots though and my 4gb in my current pc is 4x 1gb sticks.

Googling shows that it is AMD socket AM2 motherboard and hence incompatible with your Intel socket 775 Q8200 cpu.

Gah, il just have to wait until I get paid to buy some new parts then. :) Im gonna spend the next hour or so putting all the stuff out of my current pc in my old case, its a huge case with more fans so hopefully it'l help keep my cpu cooler.

Thanks man.

You are welcome:cool:. Though don't forget to buy new cpu cooler for your Q8200, if you intend to stay with it. Other members are more knowleadgeable with regard to cpu coolers :)
