Overclocking Voltages

Hi all

I'm going to give Overclocking ago with my next build when I get my Ryzen CPU... However I've watched a few videos regarding OC'ing and people tweaking voltages, How do you know when to change the voltage and what is a safe or maximum voltage to reach?

With voltages the rule of thumb is "use the lowest you can while still being stable" as high voltages lead to increased temperatures as well as decreased lifespan of your CPU. With that in mind, what you tend to do when overclocking the CPU is try to find a good trade-off between increased voltage to keep you stable at your increased clock speeds, but without going too high in voltage that you're causing damage. Usually you hit a point with the clock speeds where you'd need a large increase in voltage to remain stable, and then you have to dial it back a bit.

The general process is to increase clock speed, check for stability, if you're stable then increase some more, when you become unstable, add a bit of voltage and check for stability again. Once you're stable, go back to increasing the clock speeds again. You stop when you reach this happy compromise between increased clock speeds and the least voltage you can get away with.

As for what the "maximum" voltage you want to go to is - that varies quite a lot from chip to chip and, unfortuantely, I've been out of the game a while and so don't really know those numbers any more. Hopefully someone else can chime in with that.

Thanks bud some useful information there, so what I should try is increasing the clock speed with stock voltage first until it becomes unstable?
