Just bought another 6gb (3x2gb) for my rig.

Just heard a rumour that overclocking is harder when you’re using all the memory channels  is this true?

What effect will this have on my ability to overclock?

If you are using all 6 slots yes it will be harder to achieve a max over-clock. But for normal 24/7 use you will hardly notice any difference. You might have to tweak a voltage here and there to provide for the added strain on the CPU IMC. As you know the Internal Memory Controller will need to work a bit harder now that all 6 slots are populated.

Yeah that makes sense. Had my stable OC at 3.8 but don't push this much usage even with 8 VMs, needed more memory as this balloons with the more VMs you have

Just to add to what the others have said.

I have my i7 950 on an ASUS rampage 3 with 12gb of ram sat happily at 4.2Ghz, just needed a bit more juice on the DRAM 1.66v so minimal difference really
