I setup my new machine yesterday and decided to use the predefined overclocks.

In the bios I went straight to the pre-set 4.8ghz and after 15 minutes on Prime i got temps of 74 84 84 82. Pretty high and CPU-Z reporting volts were at 1.44.

I went into the bios and cpu volts were set at auto.

Is is wise to go with a pre-set overclock?

on my 2600k i dont use the pre set clocks coz it over volts the cpu. i have the same mobo and can use less volts than 1.44, using 1.38 on my cpu and on my friends i5 2500k im using 1.35. its upto you what you want to set it though. there are a few guides if you search for them as to settings to use setting it maunaly :)

I know there are several settings that can be changed in the bios. But is it not possible to just change the multiplier and the cpu voltage (to the lowest stable amount) and leave everything else as is, auto?

you can always try this way but you will probably have to use more voltage than is needed. i can lookup my settings tonight when i get in if you like?

will try my best to :) i still need help myself getting 5ghz stable. some tweeks here and there. strange someone else wants the same sort of thing as me though in the same day!

im also interested :D just need to get a desk and chair for my pc to get it re setup moving house ftl :( also i think i got my h100 on badly as my temps spike wen i load the cores

Attempting to overclock:

Set the multiplier to 47 and cpu voltage to 1.405.

Seems stable so far with temps at 58 67 67 65C

However, CPU-Z and Realtemp show the multiplier is only 40. Why is this?

right sooooo

Processor states

The CPU power states C0-C3 are defined as follows:
C0 is the operating state.
C1 (often known as Halt) is a state where the processor is not executing instructions, but can return to an executing state essentially instantaneously. All ACPI-conformant processors must support this power state. Some processors, such as the Pentium 4, also support an Enhanced C1 state (C1E or Enhanced Halt State) for lower power consumption.[8]
C2 (often known as Stop-Clock) is a state where the processor maintains all software-visible state, but may take longer to wake up. This processor state is optional.
C3 (often known as Sleep) is a state where the processor does not need to keep its cache coherent, but maintains other state. Some processors have variations on the C3 state (Deep Sleep, Deeper Sleep, etc.) that differ in how long it takes to wake the processor. This processor state is optional.

wikipedia ***! basically keeps the CPU at max clock all the time! so it wont go down to no boost speeds (i think)

On auto and offset of 0.08 i can get it stable at 4.7 but by fixing the voltage to something like 1.4 which is quite high im led to believe.

try upping the core current limit to 250 also the long and short to 185 each. what ram you running at the moment speed wise that is.
