overclocking

As a learner to computers would someone kindly enlighten me as to what is the reason for overclocking.
Puzzeled.

Same reason why people tune and pimp their cars, computer enthusiasts just use smaller engines á la cores and neons. ;)
 
I might also point out that overclocking can reduce the life of components as well its not completely 'free' performance, although with decent cooling its not so much of a problem.
