As a learner to computers would someone kindly enlighten me as to what is the reason for overclocking.

1: Faster. i.e. Making something faster is an advantage because of 2:

2: Cheaper i.e. Faster in CPU terms equals increased cost thus 1: saves money

Same reason why people tune and pimp their cars, computer enthusiasts just use smaller engines á la cores and neons.

I might also point out that overclocking can reduce the life of components as well its not completely 'free' performance, although with decent cooling its not so much of a problem.
