Overclokcing assistance?

Right I have never overclocked before and have been doing plenty of reading on the subject and wondered if this was the right path of thinking?

Spec:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600
AC Freezer 7 Pro
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB)
Abit IP-35 Pro

Overclocking:

Target: 3.0Ghz


CPU Ratio Control: Manual
CPU Voltage - 1.3500v

fSB: 333
PCIE Frequency: 100
DRAM Frequency: DDR2-1067Mhz
DRAM Command Rate: 2T
DRAM Timing Control: Manual
Memory Timing: 5-5-5-15
DRAM Voltage: 2.30v
FSB Termination Voltage: 1.20V
North Brdige Voltage: 1.25V
South Bridge Voltage: 1.05V

Advanced CPU Config:

Disbale C1E Support
 
always best, if starting afresh to get the overclock sorted before you put important data on there, cos if an overclock goes bad there is a slight chance it can corrupt data.

make sure that the memory voltage being supplied by you motherboard is within the limits specified by the manufacturer.

for the rest i try to leave as many settings on auto as possible when starting.

no need to increase the cpu voltage until you've tried it at stock voltage.

raise the fsb 10mhz at a time, makes sure the system boots, then run something like orthos (or whatever stress tester may be best for quad cores) for 10 minutes to make sure the overclock isnt totally useless.

then repeat until the system wont boot or orthos fails its 10 minute run.

when the situation arises raise the cpu voltage to the next slot and try again.

that should get you started.
 
Cheers some really useful info so far. I have read so much on the subject today I think it is starting to all seem abit overwhelming. I wish somebody could just tell me the settings for my CPU and motherboard but the way I understand it each overclock is individual and may not work the same?

Anyway I have been looking at the BIOS for the IP35 - Pro and was wondering about these settings:

C1E Support - Disabled
EIST - Disabled
Virtualization Tech - Disabled

X - External Clock : 400
X - Multiplier Factor : 7.5

With the aim to reach 3.0Ghz. I understand doing it this way round should mean better overhall performance.

I could do with some adivse regards what and why I need to change regards memory settings?

Yup tend to have batches of cpu's and they all tend to clock around the same, the next batch may clock better or worse etc.

check you're memory sticks most of them have timings on a label on them, once you start overclocking those timings are likely to be close to what you can aim for, for the time being while working towards the 3gb i'd leave them on auto.

keep upping the fsb, may need to up the cpu/memory voltage etc once it starts to get unstable.

make sure you keep an eye on you're temps under loading when you're testing you're overclock :).

Cheers m8 some useful info there, is it practical to aim for 3.0ghz with this chip and the cooler I am using?

no reason why not, just make sure you keep a check on the temps, long as they are reasonable then no worries.

when u increse the fsb you increase the memory speed is it a good idea to slow the memory back to stock once you increse the fsb?

if the memory speed is likely to exceed its recommended speed yes.

issue that may occur is that only some motherboards allow u to set the fsb/memory to unlinked (so you can run an fsb of 460 but the memory can be set to 400etc) so it might limit the overclock you can get.

best bet to start with, have seen people say they;ve changed it but if i was you i wouldnt bother til the overclock is sorted.
 
*another noob question*

Im running some 400mhz or 800mhz in bios ram with a q6600 with a rated Fsb of 1066 does 1066 ram suit the q6600 better for overclocking ?


Also im new to overclocking espically with cpus have overclocked graphics cards in the past though.

My target for my q6600 is 3.00ghz im running some ocz 6400 ram with it atm im at 2.45ghz now with my ram speed at 340mhz it was 400mhz at stock but set the ramdivider to 2.5 in bios or 667mhz is the right method of OC lowering the ram speed and uppering the fsb? :o :o :o :o

I am still not sure what I need to change regards my memory??

I am using 4GB of CorsairXMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 verified to work at 800Mhz. CAS 5-5-5-18

Any suggestions?
 
OK I have done some more reading on OC-ing but I really would appriciate some feedback? At present I am planning to overclock my PC sometime next week either Tuesday or Wednesday once I have finished building it.

I'm totally new to OC-ing a pc, but I'm eager to learn. That's why I've been reading so much already.

From what I read the multiplier on a Q6600 is 9, correct me if I'm wrong?

Am I right in thinking that this would work:

9 X 334 this would set my CPU at just over 3.0Ghz this would then make my ram run at DDR667mhz, in a 1:1 ratio with my FSB? My overall plan is too try and do it without having to bump up the voltage?
