Hey there gents, never used these forums before although i've been an OCuK customer for nearly 15 years!

My current setup is a first gen i7 920 overclocked at 4.2ghz. Sadly this is where I stopped following just about every new release of anything, so this is where I would love to have some of your advice.

If this helps, I don't think I need to upgrade my ram, I have 12gb ddr 1600mhz, I forget the name, corsair or crucial, vengeance maybe, it has massive heatsinks :P

Also I am using a Seasonic 750w PSU, so I don't think that needs upgrading either, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm currently looking at getting the i5 4690k, with the Asus maximus VII Ranger. From what I understand no games make use of HT technology so for myself who only uses it for gaming, an i7 is wasted.

I've also got my eye on the corsair h75 as a cpu cooler and the OCZ Arc 100 240gb for my OS and a couple of games I play regularly.

My budget is around £450. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello and welcome.

What case do you have?

What resolution is your monitor?

What GFX card do you have?

All you want is a better gaming PC yes? depending on the answers all I can suggest is the SSD+GFX card and cooler.

Hey Stulid, thanks for the reply.

My case is an NZXT Phantom 530 full tower black.

My monitor is 1080p. Asus 144hz.

My graphics card is an r9 290.

Yes, all I'm interested in is a better gaming PC, for new released games, GTA 5, The witcher 3 etc. Currently my PC runs newer games sluggishly and I can only put the finger on my CPU struggling.

Tried afresh install of the OS and newest AMD drivers? Apart from a lack of SSD that looks like a nice setup.

If you must change the CPU etc out then can you wait for skylake and its boards and possibly DDR4 ram?

Yeah I can wait, depending on what the price of the skylake will be, as my budget won't change, but DDR4 is too expensive to make that upgrade, unless it's going to drastically drop in price.

Yes I have a fairly fresh install, only did it 4-5 weeks ago before the purchase of GTA 5. Using the latest AMD drivers.

My current HD is one of the hybrid ones.

So I'm assuming you are saying that if I was to get the i5 4690k and overclocked it, I wouldn't see much of an improvement?

I'm not convinced its the big boost you are needing.

A proper SSD is a good buy, Samsung 850 Evos being excellent price/performance.

Wouldn't that bottleneck the GPU? I've already been told that my cpu bottlenecks my GPU even though I've managed what I understand to be a decent and stable overclock on it. Although I am very grateful for the advice given.

*edit* I didn't mention my motherboard, I'm currently using the gigabyte G1 Guerrilla Trying to find out if this xeon is compatible, but that link you gave me makes me want it. I didn't even know it existed lol I've always seen Xeons as server CPU's :S
