Overheating Dell...

So my L702x is on its last legs so it seems.

From the left hinge packing up a while ago (no misuse, common issue with Dell models and poor design) and not wanting to move anymore which coincidentally snapped away from the lid when trying to close it to a new problem occurring. Lucky this laptop doesn't leave the table so it can stay open.

Anyway, the new problem;

The laptop overheats when doing anything it thinks is intensive, this could be from having a couple of internet browsers open with multiple tabs, to running a game or even just watching YouTube. So it really is rather random. The fan kicks in and really powers away when any of the above is happening, the left hand side of the laptop becomes too hot to touch for more than a couple of seconds. We are talking fry and egg hot here where you can actually burn yourself. But the result of this happening is the USB ports all cut out and none of them work. They come back to life when you stop doing whatever it is that you are doing and the laptop cools down.

Has anyone experienced this before?

I really give up on Dell, nothing but problems from the first month of ownership where they have already replaced the motherboard once.

I had a very similar issue on my L501x. Web browsing and light usage is not so bad, though still warm. Running any 3D application results in extremely high temps, like 95C high.

For me, this was a gradual and noticeable change. I've yet to strip it and take a closer look but my hunch is it is more likely the thermal paste breaking down. I'd be very surprised if it is dust in the heatsink in mine as I have regularly "cleaned" it with compressed air and a vacuum cleaner.

Luckily my new laptop can be cleaned properly as it is considerably easier to gain access to these parts.
