Just after some advice please....

Been running a BFG 9800 GX2 on a Vista 64 machine for the past couple of weeks with no problems up until yesterday and now again today.

Problem: after about an hours use, be it gaming or just browsing the internet I get a message on my monitor stating that it is going into power saving mode. Green light changes to orange and the fan on my graphics card comes on full blast and stays on. I end up having to do a soft reboot to get my display up again. I can then use the computer (straight away) for about another hour before it happens again. This happened four times last night in the space of 5 hours and it has happened 3 times tonight in 4 hours.

Today, I even took the side panel off my computer and had a large fan blowing cool air into the case and yet it still happened. Touching the graphics card it is quite hot but not burning. You can keep you hand on it without any discomfort. With the fan blowing on it the card was very cool.

Does this sound like it is just an overheating problem or could the card have developed a fault?

Just played crysis for 10 mins and the temps rose to 72 tops.

Don't know if this means anything but when switching between the 2 GPU using GPU-Z only one shows fanspeed, the other shows fan speed at 0% and the temp on that one is roughly 3 deg higher and there is a variation of nearly 10 deg on the PCB temp.

Latest update and more woes!!!

Before deciding to RMA'ing the GX2 I got my old 8800GTX out of my XP system and installed it into my Vista system and it was worse!

Now, everytime I boot as soon as the windows desktop has finished loading the monitor goes into power save mode :(

I can boot into safe mode and no problems. I have uninstalled the drivers (175.19) and tried several earlier versions and the same thing keeps happening each time.

Tried Windows repair/restore with no joy.

Tested memory and all checked out okay.

All cables and seating of card are okay. Swopped modular cables on power supply just in case.

Tried booting with my other monitor and it happens with that one too.

any suggestions please?

Doesnt sould like a heat issue if running in wondows and playing games produces the same problem after the same period of time. Even so double check your CPU temp. The graphics temps u stated are perfectly fine and by the sounds of it it is not a graphics issue. Maybe faulty mobo? You didnt set your pc to go into power save mode after 1 hour did you? hehe
