Overheating problem?

My housemate leaves his computer on. He recently came back to it and it had switched itself off. When he came to turn it on the screen said something along the lines of "the computer shut down due to overheating-see the manufacturer". You could then press F4 to boot into Windows.

On booting to Windows it then reached the desktop and stalled, until he took a DVD out of the DVD drive.

His CPU fan is clean and attached firmly, so it hasnt come loose.

Any idea what has overheated and the best way of remedying it?

The PC is a fairly generic Emachines one (think its P4 3ghz, 1gb RAM, SATA HDD, Windows XP Home). He replaced the GPU a while ago with a 6600gs, but Ive checked the PSU (400W Antec one) and it should be fine with it.

Download Everest, speedfan or core temp to check the temperatures of various
components.
