Overheating RAM

Hi,

I have an old P4 machine that I recently upgraded as best I could with a new hard drive and RAM (doubling from 384 to 768MB, running XP). However I am having considerable problems with the temperature of the RAM, which quickly heats up to the 50 degree threshold to set my intel motherboard alarm off, and after a few more minutes at this temerature my system restarts.

I looked up fans specifically for memory but are these really a good idea? Have read they can be noisy, plus I'm a bit sus that there seem to be so few on the market. Also, they say they are for DDR-1 and 2, but I have RAMBUS RIMMs, does anyone know if a memory fan wouldn't fit onto my memory (the fans attach to the RAM-detach clips)? I read in another forum some guy suggest a 12cm fan be aimed directly at the RAM instead, but have had problems investigating this with a spare 8cm fan.

Basically I'm wondering where such a fan would bet set up. I tried simply placing it at the bottom of the case and aiming up, with little or no effect; I tried blu-taccing it to my case cover opposite where the RAM sits, and again, little or no effect. Are these results anything to do with the fan being placed directly next to in effect a solid wall and therefore inhibiting air flow, or have I just got a crap fan? The only setup that seems to make any difference is by placing a stand at the bottom of my case that has a crocodile clip on the end of an arm, attaching my fan on the end of this and pointing it at the RAM. Is this the way forward, only with a better (12cm) fan?

I would post a picture of my machine only I'm new and clicking on 'insert image' only seems to bring up text for me to enter. Just in case it will upload the picture when I actually submit the post, I'll try it anyway:

Extra info, if relevant: I can't control fans in the BIOS at all, anything attached to the motherboard is controlled automatically. I have no fan at the front of my PC, and if I did and had it attached to the motherboard, it would only activate when the temperature sensor regulating it hit 36 degrees. Temperature now is at 48 degress around the RAM zone, but if I run any game it will increase rapidly. When I took off the case cover, that temperature dropped to 40 in under 5 minutes.

Sorry for long post, and thanks for any help,
