Overheating

Trying to figure out why my laptop turns off randomly sometimes and just installed a program called AA1FanControl.

Says my CPU is running at 88 degrees.

Surely that's a bit hot isn't it?

It's an Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 and im used to monitoring AMD temps.

Install CoreTemp and check the temperature using that.

What make of lappy is it? How old? AC adaptor in good condition?

lol yes it is "abit" hot, i think the max temp is 100 degrees.
i'd suggest getting a can of compressed air and giving the air outlet for the laptop a good blow. or if that doesnt work maybe open the laptop up if your willing to possibly lose warranty and apply thermal paste again and clean out any excess dust.

Acer Aspire 5633WLMI which i've owned about 18 months i guess.
If i unplug the AC Adapter, then the battery only lasts about 8 minutes or so

If you leave CoreTemp open for a while, do the % load amounts for the two cores tend to stay quite low (around where they are in that screenshot), or do they tend to stay quite high?

Yeah, that's definitely too hot.
I'd get some compressed air asap, and clean the vents on it.
If you think you can, or know someone that can, apply a fresh coat of Artic 5 to the CPU. This should help reduce the CPU core temperature.

Also, it may be worthwhile investing into a laptop cooling pad.

If you think you can, or know someone that can, apply a fresh coat of Artic 5 to the CPU. This should help reduce the CPU core temperature.

Also, it may be worthwhile investing into a laptop cooling pad.

If it keeps happening, i'm guessing if it goes pop it would be covered under my house contents insurance wouldn't it?

When Intel Burn was running, did you hear the fan speed up? Might want to check if it's actually spinning at all.

My ACER lappy broke after 13 months ie one month after warranty.

I opened it up and found the graphics card heatsink had NO paste at all

the CPU was barely covered in paste either.

ACER = Cheap = poor build quality.

Sorry Andy but the saying goes you get what you pay for.

Good luck least you've caught yours before it went POP I spent 1200 euros on mine

If it's in warranty, RMA it...


If not, you'll have to pay to get it fixed unless you are good at taking apart laptop (it's pretty fiddly).

Ive got an Acer TM5510 which was overheating so much that i had to take it outside during the recovery reinstall cos it was so hot! I bought an Antec cooling mat which has vastly improved the situation.

Yeah, tell me about it. Im going right off laptops. They were useful whilst at uni but I dont need the mobility so much anymore. PC's for the win.
