Overlapping pet insurance

Just had the renewal through for the insurance our 3 cats, and unsurprisingly it has gone up.

What is surprising is that even though I have an online quote from the same supplier (Tesco) which is 20% cheaper, they are refusing to match the price. Needless to say, I told them to cancel the renewal.

If I take out a new policy (either with Tesco or another company), there is the standard exclusion of the first 14 days of the policy... But is there anything to stop me starting the new policy 14 days before the old one ends? Since they wouldn't be covered by the new one until the end of the old one, I'm not double insuring, so that shouldn't cause any issues...

Why has it gone up and by how much?

We are with Petplan for our two cats... one of the cats has had several operations within the year in excess of £3000.

Ours went up £1 a month in line with the increase of insurance tax.

Although the excess did go up £10 grrrr!

Back to the question though, I can not see why you would not be able to do that.

Gone up from £21.40 to £23.85, the online quote was £19.33; not a massive amount in the grand scheme of things, but still ~£50 over the year.

I'm assuming it hasn't gone up for any reason other than it's a renewal. There are no changes on the policy, but the guy on the phone was giving me the sales pitch about how it had gone up due to the increased risk as with the renewal they would be covered for any pre-existing conditions which had manifested during the year, whereas if I started a new policy they wouldn't... which is fine, as we've not had any claims for any of the cats and they haven't been to the vets except for their annual checkups/vaccinations.

Once or twice I've had over-lapping insurances for our cats - although not with the same company. As said, there is either a 14 or 30 day exclusion with new policies and you can bet your life that is when one of the moggies will decide to hurt themselves.
Saying that, I've just moved one of ours without an overlap - got past the 14 days without problems :)

Sounds about right then.

With cars its about the fact you could claim off both insurances but in this instance in that first 14 days you couldn't claim off the new one so your old one could not claim that the new one should cover it.
