overlay an image ontop of another without using position absolute?

i have been using position absolute of an image to overlay it on top of another image which had position relative. unfortunately a bit of jquery requires that the lower image and anything it's within isn't position anything other then static otherwise it messes up the effect. annoy but i would like to us the effect and i can't find a work around.

i'm hoping someone on here can suggest a way (preferably without javascript) to make an image that will always be the same height and width overlaid on top of an image that will always be the same width but could be different in height up to a maximum of 600px.

Can't you use absolute positioning with a z-index?

unfortunately not as the parent needs to be positioned relative for that to work, and making anything the main image is in position relative messes up a jquery effect i'm using which uses offset()
