overlays.....are they needed?

So I have finally got sweetfx working with watchdogs on windows 8.1 but it will only work using radeon pro and with afterburner and evga precision disabled. I have 2 780s which I have overclocked so what happens if I have them turned off? I take it that my cards are not overclocked anymore? Also what happens with cooling as I cannot have my custom fan profile set anymore?

You can still use Afterburner for gpu overclocking without the overlay. I do it.

Yeah some features work, like sweetfx and I think forcing triple buffer.

I'm not sure if I understand the question tbh, but you can apply your clocks with AB, close it and your clocks will still be applied.

Ah I thought if I closed AB then the program would be shut down, not running in the background.

SweetFX or tweaks of that nature generally don't like overlays.

Yeah, I find the overlay disappears once sweetfx is used.
