Overseas charges

Going to take my phone on holiday - normally don't ever bother.

(Samsung Galaxy S)

I know all calls/texts received and sent will charge me, can check that out on the Virgin Mobile site.

But is there anything I should be doing to not get charged? My contract has a 1GB of data, but I guess that as well won't work in Cyprus.
Juice defender disables my mobile data when wi-fi is activated anyway, but I know my holding down the home button I can disable mobile data.

Anything else I should be doing?

Thanks
