I bought my wife one of these for Christmas, and she's just got round to making space for it, and on closer inspection I was pretty surprised at the quality of this unit and wondered if any other owners can confirm this is to be expected?

Difficult to capture, but about an inch above the 's' is a scuff in the enamel

The pressed insert that the bowl stands on has an irregular gap to the base

The collar below the enamel is very poor quality metal and has an irregular gap

I may be being very picky, but this machine cost quite a bit, so would be grateful if someone could put my mind at ease :)

I don't have that appliance but I've used Kitchen Aid stuff in the past and I would expect better TBH.

It's from John Lewis so I know there won't be any issue in getting a replacement, but I wanted to know if this is to be expected really, before we went down that route - it weighs a tonne! :p

My aunt has one and from what i remember when i had a look at it, it seemed to be very well built.

Id just take it back for a replacement, you wont have any issues with John Lewis in that respect.

I've found something else out from my wife; the mixer wasn't wrapped in plastic, just sandwiched between two pieces of moulded polystyrene, the electrical cord was loosely placed in the mixing bowl, along with the plug, which didn't have a protective plastic cover over the pins, which all sounds like it's been returned previously.

Edit

Looking at youtube unbox vids (sad!) it seems this is the norm, so I'm stumped again

Another problem is we've had it in a box since 28th November (purchased early for Christmas) but only opening it first time yesterday, which doesn't look very good int erms of returns...

You might not be able to get a refund on the product, but you'll easily get an exchange or even gift vouchers to the value of it.

That said, what you've described about the quality of the unit and the way it was packaged doesn't ring true with my, admittedly limited, experiences of the Artisan mixers.

I've been sent review/test copies that were both packaged better and in better condition than yours, despite having been round the block a few times. Something isn't right about yours but you can rely on JL to sort it out for you with the minimum of fuss.

Took it back to jlp and looked at all the others and they were all the same, so decided to keep ours and put up with it. I don't think kitchen aid are the greatest quality, but they still beat all the others on looks hand down!

We have one of these and i haven't noticed any of those issues with it.

One thing i would point out to you as a new owner of one, is to check the whisk does not touch the bowl with the tip as it will wear both down. The machines often need adjusting from the factory setting!

I don't think my one has funny clearances like that. At least I haven't noticed, anyway. I've noticed it's very functional in design with no frills, but it is way more capable than the Kenwood K-Mix stand mixer I had. That one went back because it was actually completely useless at mixing dough. Another bonus is it stays put when it's operating, which is much safer than the 14kg K-Mix which danced about all over the work surface.
