When you upgrade, you need to upgrade from something. In this case it's an OEM version, which is tied to one machine. You can't move that license from that machine, so a Vista upgrade would have to go on that machine as well.

If the license doesn't bother you, then go ahead, but it's a waste of money because you still won't be licensed.
I didnt say I was going to use it on another pc, I just wanted to know the facts coz its a bit confusing. So if someone did buy a 'full upgrade' version to upgrade XP OEM, are they entitled to a rebate of difference in cost between the oem upgrade and the full upgrade?

No, that's not true.

Say for example I buy an OEM version of Windows, and install it on my PC. Then I get a new system, and install it on that. It wants me to call Microsoft to activate, so I phone and lie that I had to format because something failed. I get a new code, and Windows activates perfectly, and Genuine Advantage lets me download all the great freebies.

It looks fine, runs fine, but is in violation of the OEM license, and therefore isn't a licensed product. Now that might not bother anyone, but like I've said numerous times in the thread, why bother spending money on it if you have no plans to adhere to the license agreement anyway?
Have you let someone borrow a music CD? That is against the lisence but everyone has done it at least once.

Well that's even less legal.

I'm sorry that I assumed that by asking what version of Vista you needed for file encryption, that you intended to be properly licensed.

The version you need to steal is Business or Ultimate.
That aint fair, I never said that I was going to use an upgrade on another pc, hell i've only got 1. Sorry if weve got our wires crossed but I dont steal software.

I just sent an email to MS

I have an OEM version of windows XP Pro. If I bought the Vista Business upgrade, Would I be allowed to install it on a 2nd pc or would the upgrade still be an OEM license thus tied to the pc xp pro is on? And what if the pc goes wrong and I buy a new one, would I be allowed to install the upgrade on the new one?

Thanks

Should be an interesting reply, if I get one:)
