Hi. Having spent far too much time studying and looking at monitors I have come to the conclusion that M-PVA is the way I need to go. I'm aware that the Viewsonic VP930 is M-PVA, what other 17/19 inch monitors are there that are M-PVA? I've seen mention of certain Dell monitors, do OcUK sell these Dell monitors?

Andy

OCuk used to stock the Dell 1905FP.I purchased a 8ms RT one, few months ago. Excellent monitor indeed. Production I believe has now been discontinued by Dell.

to avoid confusion, there are a couple of panel types here which i think you migt be confusing perhaps. There's PVA (Patterned Vertical Alignment) which is made by Samsung. There's MVA (Multi-Domain Vertical Alignment) made mostly by AU Optronics and Fujitsu, and there's P-MVA (Premium MVA) made again mostly by AUO.

You can try the panel search tool here and just put "PVA", "P-MVA" or "MVA" into the search field for 'panel' and it will show you all the models using that technology :)

there's a lot of panels out there :)

What are you looking for in a TFT? What reason have you established that VA panels are best (note: i'm not syaing they're not, just wanting to know you're reason behind the statement). Hopefully we can help clear things up and help you choose a good model for your needs :)

Hi again. I'm looking for a non-gaming screen for general office/internet use as well as basic photo stuff. I've looked at a variety of screens in local stores (admittedly they were all budget products) and I do not like the way the screens discolour from slightly off centre and the uneven illumination when viewing a white screen. I understand from reading numerous reviews this is less of a problem with non-TN screens.

I had originally intended not to spend over £200 on a 17/19" screen but I now know I want 19" and accept that I'll probably have to spend in the region of £300.

Thanks for taking an interest.

Andy

Hi Andy, always happy to help when I can :)

You're right in your theory behind this. The TN Film panel market is very much aimed at the gamers out there, and for people who don't game, and want an office / photo use screen, it is a shame to accept the sacrifices that TN Film panels make. Mostly these are in colour depth (being largely 6 bit panels), movie playback (showing noise), black depth (never been TN's strong point) and most notably in viewing angles (especially vertically).

For your uses, the afformentioned Dell 1905FP might be ideal here. You may end up with either the 20ms PVA version or the 8ms P-MVA version (same panel in effect as the VP930). Either way, both offer excellent all round performance for your uses, and would be ideal i think. The 1905FP also helps keep costs down as some other models like the Viewsonic VP930 are a fair bit more pricey. You could also consider looking at other PVA/MVA models perhaps like the Belinea 102035W or Viewsonic VX2025WM if you fancied a larger 1680 x 1050 (20"WS) resolution, but these might push the budget too much.

Hi Baddass. Thanks for your advice. It will definitely have to be an 19" monitor - space & cost. I've had a look on the OcUk site an cannot see the the Dell listed, is it listed on a page away from the main monitor page or am I to look elsewhere? Are all Dell 1905s suitable or does it have to be the FP model?

Thanks again for your help - Andy

Andy, our needs are similar. Like you I've seen a few budget TFT screens that put me right off TFT. My aging Iiyama started playing up last month, so I decided to take the plunge. I was initially put off by the £300+ price tag on the VP930.

As an amateur (digital) photographer I needed something that would show true colours and that meant a panel capable of 8 bit colour. I spend a lot of time in front of my screen and that meant something that was razor sharp.

I kept coming back to Viewsonic - and as the VP730 is a TN panel, that meant the VP930. So I took the plunge and haven't regretted it.

This screen is awesome. It took a bit of time to set up (I'm a fussy beggar!) but was worth it.

My advice is to go for the Viewsonic VP930 - you won't be disappointed.

Forgeman's advice might be very useful here, he was in the same position like he says :)

OcUK used to stock thw 1905FP but no longer do sadly. In fact, the 1905FP is being withdrawn and replaced by the 1907FP, but that;s using a TN Film panel :(

The 1905FP is still available but you'll have to shop around

What about the 1906FP?

The 1906FP is an older 25ms PVA panel from Samsung. It's good in static use, but not so well suited to gaming due to it's lacking responsiveness
