Hi guys, for some reason I cannot get my seagate barracuda drive quiet in the lower cage of my original p180. The sound seems really bassy and travels through the whole case, wheras when in the upper cage when it is mounted flat, it is virtually silent.

I ideally need to use the lower one now with the length of gfx cards getting in the way. I have tried having the screws and grommets tight, and fairly loose but it does not seem to make a difference... Which way round are other people using the rubber grommets, thick side inside the cage or outside?

Thanks.

Might be that drive's full weight is resting only on grommets under it making them able to absorpt less vibration.

Also at least before fluid bearings became common HDDs were sensitive to changes in position after they had been running for some time in one position.

It's a 3-4 year old seagate sata2, so I assume it would have fluid bearings. You make a good point about it resting on the bottom, maybe worth tightening it more at the top so it sort of hangs down rather than resting on bottom.

on my P182, i've got the HDD's mounted with the thick side of the grommets pointing up on both of them, ie, the bottom grommet's thick inside and the top one's thick outside.

this is the only way that makes sense because it means the weight of the HDD's is resting on the most sillicon, both top and bottom.

leave the screws nice and loose. the hdd out to jiggle about in the cage really easily.
