Hello, i've got two computers, computer one and computer two. For the sake of clarity lets call computer one Suzanne and computer two Michelle.

Now, all I want is Suzanne to comunicate with Michelle by using a crossover cable from Suzanne's NIC to Michelle's NIC.

Now Suzanne has a static private IP address 192.168.14.2 subnetmask 255.255.255.0

and

i've put Michelle on the same subnet hence, her IP address is 192.168.14.3 subnetmask 255.255.255.0

Now, when I configure the static IPs to the relevent NICs everything is good. When I connect using the crossover cable the two little computer icons flash in the corner and say connected at 100mbps.

However, I cannot ping each other.

All I want to do is share files between the two computers.
I ran "set up a small/home office network" wizard on both XP machines, but I still can't seem to ping, or share files.

Help

are they in the same workgroup? have you run the network setup wisard and told it what type of network you are using?

Yeh I did all that, but it still didn't seem to work.
I even disabled any firewalls or security measures.
In the end I just gave up and transfered my files via a removable USB.

I can't believe I can't setup a home office network yet I study Cisco CCNA :o

lol, though in your defense Windows networking can be a bitch at times :D

Have you had a play around with Windows Firewall? There are options to block ICMP + you can allow Windows Filesharing access through an exception rule if the network setup wizard hasn't done that already for you.

Do you have anything like Netlimiter installed?

Are you sure both PCs are definitely setup with the correct addresses?
