P2P Prevention

Ive got a bit of an issue with P2P software.. (No, Im not trying to use it, complete opposite infact)

I currently live in a shared house of 4, but one of our housemates has taken it upon himself to use P2P software during all hours of the day, and to be quite frank its annoying the hell out of the rest of us despite us repeatedly asking him to either a) cap it or b) stop doing it completely. It grinds the entire network to a halt when he's using it and web browsing is slower than a 56k modem.

We run off of a wireless network using an all-in-one job. Any ideas how we can stop it?

Sorry, its a BT Voyager 2100 and the software he uses at the moment is DC++...

Done some googling and it seems DC++ is smart enough to work its way around specific port blocking..

Any ideas?

[Edit] Or DC++ Stealth, rather

Change the WEP key and password on the access point so he cant find out what the new one is.

Could always try banning his MAC address/changing the WPA/WEP whenever he's downloading to try and get the message through to him.

Ah now theres an idea..

The worst of it is, that he tends to do the majority of the downloading when he's not even using his computer, i.e. when he's at work or in the evenings!

Blocking his MAC in the evenings is one solution, as thats when its most unbearable! Any clues as to software blocking so he could still use HTTP and play games etc but not use P2P?

Depending on how the house is wired, would it not be just as easy to undo the cable to his pc from the router?

not sure if that router does it but sometimes you are able to have a timer set on the blocking of ports and mac addresses, then you could block him for certain times and then let him do it during the night.

Tis quite hard to achieve what your wanting to do.

It would require a proxy or filtering box with file signatures for deep packet inspection.
This kinda thing is quite expensive.

Or you could however have a look at the L7 project and incorporate it within SmoothWall.

take the aerial out the back of his wlan card while hes out

or second thoughts do proxy filtering or block is mac address again while hes out so to avoid confruntation from him

Yeah block his ip address while he is out, and when he comes home and nothing has downloaded it might make him think he is wasting his time leaving his pc downloading all day.
