P35 to X38/X48 worth it?

Currently I have a DS3 Rev 1 and I'm not too happy with it, im sure its limiting my clock, I just ordered a TRUe to help temps and would relly like to get 3.8 stable, currently 3.5 is the best I can get and then the NB temps are silly.

Would I gain anything going to X38 or even X48?

Current specs

Q6600 @ 3.5Ghz
Gigabyte P35 DS3 Rev 1
Scythe Ninja with Sharkoon SE 2000
Crucial Ballistix 4 x 1Gb
Asus 8800GTS 512mb
Lian-Li PC7 (considering upgrading to a PC70B for extra room)
Corsair 520w

Am I crazy doing these fairly small upgrades to an already good system?

Any suggestions for a better board bit it P35/X38/X48 I dont have silly amounts to spend as I wont get much for this DS3

Thanks

Nick

Possibly the wrong forum pal :D

Whats limiting your clock? On some boards usually you will hit a brick wall when approaching 400 on the FSB but a little voltage on the NB usually sorts that out.

Oh shoot, can a kind mod move to motherboards please.

It just seems to need loads of juice to get stable clocks, then the vdroop looks bad to me, see my thread in the overclocking and cooling section about Prime95 errors.

I already have +0.2v on NB

Maybe a better P35 - DS4/DQ6?

I had a P35 DS3P before the X38 in sig. Wish i'd kept it TBH as the chipset ran very cool and it overclocked just as well.

I've never needed any voltage on the northbridge.

Also, with the P35's/X38's i always look at cpu and ram voltage first.

Thanks

How about an Asus P5K/P5E? or Abit IP35 pro? Chances they would be better than my DS3?

Edit how about the DFI Lan Party DK X38-T2R? Little over budget and looks like it needs NB cooling adding but I'd stretch if its going to help.

I'd probably go for the IP35Pro or the OCUK pro version which is also supposed to be a good board.

Not sure about the ASUS as the K's and E's confuse! :D

The DFI is the mainstream version not the enthusiast one so clocking might (but don't quote me on that) be a little less impressive than you'd expect.

What about the DFI LanParty DK P35-T2RS?

That DFI sounds good but I heard the TRUe will only mount facing upwards because of the NB heatsink.

Any other suggestions for sub £100 board that will get a Q6600 to 3.8Ghz?

Thanks

Whats the E stand for? lol

I'm looking at the Abit IP35 in MM, wont have cost me much at all then by time I sold my DS3, good plan?

P.S - thanks to the Don that moved it

As someone who sold pretty much all their P35 boards and bought in X38 and X48 boards to replace them, I'm quite disappointed. Only CrossfireX is significantly faster.

I think you could spend a fortune on motherboards and you wouldn't see any benefit as not all CPUs will run 3.6GHz.

Your P35-DS3 is one of the best clockers on the market. I'd keep it and save for something that will give a significant speed increase elsewhere to be honest.

I got an Abit IP35 from mm, I'll sell my DS3 and it wont have cost me that much and I get something to have a play with lol

i think x38 are same as x48 just some new cooling solutions maybe new layauts and new bios u even can crack x38 to become x48
