P35C-DS3R BIOS confusion....

I just upgraded to a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R mboard and a Q6600.

I currently have the CPU overclocked to 2.7Ghz (300x9) and my Geil DDR2 running at 750Mhz...all perfectly stable, no problems.

When I enter the BIOS it always shows the FSB options as disabled even though POST and CPU-Z confirm the chip is running at 2.7Ghz. Even if I re-enable FSB in the BIOS and force it to the default of 266Mhz I still get 2.7Ghz at POST. For some reason my settings with regards to overclocking seem stuck at 300x9.

Everything else in the BIOS such as memory timings, voltages can be adjusted with no problems, and retain their settings.

Ideally I would like to get to 333x9 to give me 3Ghz.

Any ideas appreciated.

The board is running BIOS F1.

Flashed BIOS to F2 (i'm sure there's an F3 out) and removed battery for a minute to reset.

Booted up fine at standard 2.4Ghz (266x9). Increased FSB to 300 and again booted fine at 2.7Ghz. Increased FSB to 312 and POST still reported 2.7Ghz. Entered BIOS and it was still showing 312x9....strange.

I think I'll leave as is for now.

BTW other settings in BIOS are PCI-E at 100Mhz, DDR at +0.2V and 2.0/2.5x depending on FSB, FSB at +0.1V, MCH at +0.1V, CPU at 1.325V.

Seems strange alright. I wonder if the CMOS chip is bad. As I understand it, when you modify values, they are stored in the cmos chip, not in the bios, but I could be wrong. That would explain why you can flash OK into the bios chip, but storing the values is up the creak, ie a bit stuck on in the cmos. I do not know of a program for testing the cmos, perhaps another reader might.
You should send Gigabyte support a note, they may help, though from my experience the replies are almost automated and short, but worth a try.

I've had kind fo the same problem that you seem to have mate, I don't think there's anything you can do, just not the best FSB on the board I think.

Do these boards have the PCI locked at 33mhz does anyone know?

Can't see the setting in my bios to lock it  DS3R that is

Ah cool, well I got my E6420 to 3.4 orthos stable but I cannot get it any higher just goes to boot and restarts before I see BIOS screen?

Even if I put 1.6vcore and very loose memory timings in  I have tried F1, F2, F3a and F4b bios and they all do the same?

Anything else I can try do you think ? Or is that all this chip may have?

E6420
Thermalright 120 Extreme cooler
Antec 900 case
Hyper Type-R 580w
Gigabyte DS3R
Ballistix 5300

3.4ghz is grand for an e6420, dude. Some of the newer e6600's are only getting slightly more.

Yeah I know, but its human nature to want more :)

I'm happy with it and my system flys now, just need a GTX in a few weeks and I'm sorted.....
