What should idle temp be on a P4 2.4gz (Socket 478)? Just transferred this from my old case into a Lian Li V600 for my sister and added a Zalman CNPS7700 cooler. Cannot for the life of me remember what temps were before, but in the BIOS it's now reading 39. Sounds a bit high to me. Is it, or do these older chips just run hotter than the Conroes? Is there a Windows app for getting an accurate CPU temp on this?

What are these things like for OC'ing? Worth doing?

Yes they overclock pretty well and 3.0ghz should be quite easy , if I remember correctly mine idled around 35 @ idle @ 3.1ghz with an Alpha PAL 8045.

I had a 2.4ghz about 3 years ago (or it seems that long) clocked to 3.1ghz no probs at all. Its been sold twice that know of with the original mobo, abit IS7-E, and is still running at 3.1ghz as far as I know.

Mine is solid as a rock. Has been since the day I built it nearly 4 years ago. Bit hesitant about OC'ing as don't want to ruin it's 100% record, but I'll notch it up a bit and see how it copes... :D

i just went and bought a second hand P4 2.4Ghz 800FSB w/Hyperthreading and its capable of 3Ghz stock volts, i was suprised to say the least!
originally the cpu idles at around 24-28c depending on the temp in the room, and around 40c load if not abit less. now though with the clock its near 30c idle mostly and 50-52c load, this is running the stock intel cooler aswell with some artic silver 5. However i did chop out the stock fan for a 80mm coolermaster that i think puts out around 30cfm and is 20db roughly
