Hi Guys need some expertise here, not quite ready to upgrade the entire system yet so was wondering what benefits changing CPU from my current P4 2.8 to the P4 3.2/3.4 Extreme editions would yield, obviously there is much more cache on hand but the bus speeds seem the same at 800, would the cache increase alone warrant the change or is it just not worth doing.

Cheers

"What do you use the pc for?"

And how much are you paying for the 3.4EE?

I went from a P4 3Ghz to a 3.4EE and noticed a difference. Even though these are a little long in the tooth, they still perform reasonably well and a good one will clock to 4Ghz.

What graphics cards you got? If you have a high end AGP card then the EE upgrade will see you through, if you need a new graphics card, then that can add another £100 to you bill, bearing in mind the low price of a new C2D/MB/DDR2 setup can be had for now might be a better bet.

As stated above, the price you pay for one will be the major factor, .

Pff for that money I'd go C2D. Even if you need a new motherboard you only need to spend an extra 20 quid and you could get yourself a nice boost, and dual core.
Sell your current Cpu and motherboard and you are sorted with little outlay :)

You're flogging a dead horse there mate. If you saved the £80, sold your P4 and motherboard for about £40+ and your RAM (£30 per gig) - you can get a C2D setup for about £150.

but maybe £150 is unreasonable to him? its like a lot of people here are hired by intel to get more people to buy the c2d's.

i know its just advice, and to some extent its the best one. but you've gone off topic really. he was asking about a performance increase, not really about a new set up.

no offence or anything, just needed saying.

But it probably wouldnt cost him anything if he sold all his old stuff.

Free upgrade. I did the same, sold all my socket 754 stuff and bought C2D system , didnt cost me anything to upgrade.

To your original question...

Yes, you will notice a difference. The P4 EE 3.4 IS the best chips released on the 478 platform. It will overclock to 4ghz, and you will definately notice the difference. These were excellent chips, and provided you dont pay anymore than £120-£150 for it, theres no harm in upgrading.

I'm in the same position as you Slow Coach. I wasn't ready for a whole system upgrade from a skt 478 P4. So I updated my 2.4ghz P4 (2.9ghz OC) to a 3.4ghz 478 800fsb precott. Not the EE version, but I've noticed a difference in games and general system response.

I've only played Oblivion and Civilization IV so far, but things seem sharper and more responsive.

Not that much difference, but its definitely there and will give the aging 478 skt that bit more life before taking the plunge and updating your entire system (same as me.)

In terms of how much you're willing to spend is completely upto you (obviously), but I spent 50 quid for my new P4, which is a great bargain. But I doubt I would have spent near £100 for a new Pentium.
