just got myself a P4 3.2E 800Meg processor for rig in sig....

What will this chip overclock too (on a good fan based heatsink) and will it eliminate some of the bottleneck I have with my 533 P4 2.8 chip...

I have just dropped the processor (a 3.2E GHz HT P4 1Meg cach, 800FSB) into the board and all seems ok, BUT, i can not seem to see or test whether hyperthreading is enabled, the bios is set correctly, but the system detail you pull up in the benchmarks suggest it is not enabled.

do i need any other info tweaks or drivers to enable hyperthreading and is it a benefit at all?

i have the latest bios 1006.002 from ASUS web site, it says Beta, so i may roll back to a non Beta version like 1005.

Any thoughts as to why i can not see if HT is truely enabled?

Hyperthreading is ace. In the performance tab of the task manager it should have two graphs showing CPU usage. If it does, HT is enabled.

If it's not enabled then it should be under the "Advanced BIOS features" I think.

when upgrading from non HT to HT enabled cpu is there a xp app or repair install required in some way to enable system to 'see' HT!

HELP!

disable ht in bios
reboot (to windows)
Re-enable in bios
Boot again ( to windows)

Thats what i needed to do on my old asus p4c800 delx. after switchign between 4 cpu's back to my original.

Mitch007:

I have the P4 3.4GHz (N/Wood with H/T) on an Asus P4P800 E Deluxe mobo, with H/T enabled in the BIOS, with a clean installation of XP, Windows XP automatically "sees" it.

In Task Manager (Performance tab) and Device Manager (Processors) you will see it shows as 2 CPUs, or in cpu-z it shows up as CPU#1 and CPU#1 (Logical Unit). :)

EDIT:

snowdog's way would save you a clean/repair install, good to know that. ;)

In Device Manager under computer if it does not say "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" you need to update the driver.

Right click on the driver and click update driver.

Choose "No, not at this time" then click next.

Choose "Install from a specific location" click next.

Choose "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" click next.

Choose "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" click next.

Driver will install, then reboot your PC.

did this but do not get multi proc option!

I am indeed running XP. fully up to date and with service pack 2

(but i believe Home Edition will run dual processor when it's managed on a single die like the HT chips it will not manage two independant processors, I don't think....)

Any one got any more thoughts?

When you did the driver update that I detailed above, what options did it give you for the driver to install.

two options:-

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (APCI) PC
Standard PC

What does it say under the Computer section in device manager at the moment. Was the "Show compatible hardware" box ticked when you tried to update the driver.

it says....

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (APCI) PC

under CPU it actually lists 2-off 3.2GHz pentium processors

It should list the CPU twice, which is good news. However under computer it should say ACPI Multiprocessor PC, if it doesn't then when you update the driver it should give you that option. I'm looking into it, will keep trying.
