P4 478 Extreme Ed cooling requirements

Currently using P4 2.8 Northwood clocked to 3.4 in a Antec Sonata Case with the Case fan set to minimum using a Zalman 7000 Copper Cooler. Very Stable never had any problems.

Can pickup 3.4 Extreme Edition at reasonable prices these days. Question is will I need to increase the speed of the Case fan to provide extra cooling or can I get away with it?

PC is silent at the moment don’t want any increase in noise by upgrading anyone used the EE advise?

A new C2D setup would mean buying new MB, CPU, PSU, GFX etc …….expensive!

I can pickup a EE for £100 on that famous auction site. I don’t play games mostly Video/Audio encoding and general PC use.

My only concern is whether I would need to sacrifice silence by having to apply the extra cooling.

Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60GHz (800FSB) - Retail £47.99
(£56.39) £47.99
(£56.39)
Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Motherboard
£103.38 inc VAT

Tack on maybe a 8ish for shipping and you'll toast that EE

PSU good enough for an EE - Will run a C2D easily
Board has AGP
Board supports DDR1

plus u get a bit of o'cin if desired.
Asrock board you have suggested is naff don’t like all this mix of DRR/DDR2, AGP/PCI-E. Personally I think youre asking for trouble going down that route.

No disrespect but I prefer to buy good quality components.

Ive just put together a C2D for a friend and its the exact opposite spec to the one you have given me. P35 DQ6, E6600, 8600GT, Crucial-8500, Corsair PSU, Antec 182. The PC flies but needs good airflow so have to turn up the Fans to keep it cool.

I tested P35 setup on my Sonata Case and it struggled its missing the extra 12V rail and only has one fan which I had to turn it on full blast to keep it cool. If the EE means turning the Fan up full I don’t want it!

I currently have a ASUS P4C800-E with 2GB Corsair DDR, X-Fi Elite Pro, Nvidia6600, Antec Sonata Case. Hardware acceleration the Sound Card and Video Card takes care of Multimedia requirements.

I can afford to buy a new PC but my usage does not justify the expense and would be much noisier. Upgrading to EE would allow quicker decoding. I can buy it for £100 and sell mine for £25 so its just a £75 upgrade. This would suffice my current needs until low Power Consumption Penryns and Desktop ‘Santa Rosa’ MB show up and review it then.

to asnwer your question, having had 2 EEs at 3.4 you may need to up the cooling a little yes, though not by much and you might get away with present speeds. They tend to get toasty under load especially with 2mb extra and a 3.4GHz clock.
At last! Thought we would never get there. This is what wanted to know, thanks.

Check post 4.

I answered your question
Ya you did. Its just the thread went off-track a bit with the other posters.

Partly its my fault. Its really to do reaching a compromise in noise containment vs performance. I should have really posted this some quiet PC forum but was too lazy to go through all the hassle of joining.

Well i guess trying to help making a better move is'nt a thing to be appreciated anymore.
Whenever I post here on these forums there is always an alternate view provided by someone - rightly so.

I think its good to have a debate. I have already admitted I was wrong to post this thread here. So your comments are very valid in the context of the forum. I do appreciate your input.
