I have a PC here that has a P4 (Prescott) in a Dell Optiplex GX520.
I have a spare e6300 and was going to swap it over as they are both the same socket.
Will this require an upgrade of XP? Normally I wouldn't bother, but is moving from a single core CPU to dual core CPU going to cause an issue?

You shouldn't need to reinstall the OS for a CPU change. However, check that the motherboard will definitely support the new CPU. The earlier socket 775 mobos do not support Core 2 Duos because their power circuitry is not good enough.

"P4 > C2D" <-Misleading :D had me worried for a second..

Same responses as above though, need to check what your motherboard will allow. It may be LGA775, but doesnt mean it'll support C2D

It shouldn't need an XP reinstall if the Prescott supports HT, since the OS will always be configured for multi-core. The mobo is probably your biggest problem.
