P4 Dual Core Overclocking?

Guys,

Im wanting to overclock a Pentium D 830 3.0Ghz with 1GB Corsair 1Ghz Ram. Im thinking in order to do this, the cpu would have to be overclocked to a 1:1 ratio with the ram, so no bottleneck would occur. Anyone know the correct timings and FSB settings in order to accomplish this?

Do you mean Corsair DDR2 XMS2-8500, which is 1066mhz rated memory?

Assuming your running with the memory in dual channel mode, you would need to have your FSB at 533mhz (2132 quad pumped FSB) to be running 1:1.

That level of overclock may well be possible with a Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz processor, or even higher, but for a Pentium4, that would be very unlikely. A few chips might manage it, but they need to be supercooled, LN2 cooling etc.

Thats a 166% overclock, not many P4's will do that. The poor P4 would be running at almost 8Ghz.

To get the most out of the memory, you going to need a Core2 Duo.

However, just because your memory 'can' do 1Ghz, doesnt mean you have to push it as fast as that. As you said 1:1 is generally the best performance option, as it reduces latencys. So if you set the motherboard's cpu:ram ratio at 1:1 you'll be able to push the CPU as far as it can go without ever needing to worry that its your ram thats limiting you. The CPU will be the limit long before the ram.

Once you've found the limit of the CPU, you should then change the ratio of the CPU:RAM to 3:4 or 4:5.

I think you'll find that the RAM will run flat out if your motherboard will support it, and that, because the memory controller is off-chip on an Intel set-up there is no requirement to match the FSB of the RAM and the CPU. ie. 1:1 is not important on an Intel setup. Run both as fast as they will go for best performance.

That chip is one of the hottest running of all Intel chips (it's 2 x 3GHz Prescotts on 1 die), so it's going to be difficult to get the best out of it on air cooling.

The RAM is the first 1Ghz Corsair produced "Corsair 1GB DDR2 XMS2-8500 TwinX " and MB = Asus P5WD2 Premium

Ive had the ram up to 1Ghz ie PC8500, and the CPU

3.7 on air colling with Arctic Cooler Pro 7. I mean if the ratio is not important, and just run the components as fast as they can go, then thats fine. Ill experiment
