Would there be a noticeable performance gain going from a P4 2.8Ghz 400Mhz FSB to a P4 D 2.8 Ghz 800Mhz fsb?
It is the 820 version so has the small cache size.

Thanks

Likely to be used for RAW photo editing.
I was going to buy a Core 2 Duo system which is obviously going to be a lot better than either of the above but have been offered a PC for a reasonable (i think) price which has the P4 d 820 along with 1Gb RAM and debating whether it is worth buying it or saving a lot more for the Core 2 system.

Thing is I could do with a new PC now but do not really want to spend £600 on a Core 2 system but do not want to waste money either by buying a lower spec system that would not give me a decent improvment in performance over my current system.

i had a pentium d 840 3.2
and it ran fine
however it took some cooling
when i swopped to a core2 the difference was impressive, games ran better and half the watts and less heat

I've got an 820 in this machine... The OEM heat sink's basically no good, but with a decent cooler it's quite happily taken a 25% overclock to 3500mhz, only needed a very small voltage hike, and it did a 24 hour stretch on Orthos without issues. It's a decent enough processor, never likely to impress anyone but it's also not been a terrible achilles heel. I'll probably get some sort of Core 2 in the new year, mind.

I can't compare with a P4 to be fair, I never used one, but I've no complaints about the 820.

Some Sandra Processor Arithmetic scores for comparison:

E6400: 25536
E6300: 23120
820: 17874
Sempron 3000+: 7995
2 x PIII/1133: 7696
Celeron 2GHz: 6411
PIII/1200: 3997

So the 820 is not in the same league as the slowest C2D but is still very usable. As mentioned it does run much hotter than C2D, I didn't bother with the standard HSF but went straight to an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro.

(Added later, after brekkie ;) ) I bought the 820 as I'd picked up 4 x 512MB DDR2/400 for £80 so, together with an 845-based mobo and an X1300 graphics card, it made a very cost-effective second PC. I'm using it for Virtual PC 2004 and it's managing very well.

If Frosted Nipple is around somewhere he'll tell you, his 805 runs at 3.6 ghz with a zalman aero flow but with crap case cooling.

Thanks all for the comments and feedback.
Some interesting info there, especially the processor scores in that test.

Not made a decision yet but I guess waiting to get a C2D would be the best option and I don't know what the motherboard is like with the 820 so no idea if I could overclock that machine anyway.
