P4 upgrade question

Hi I'm looking to upgrade my P4 3.06mhz fairly soon and just wondering how easy it is. What could I upgrade to that would fit right into the empty P4 socket that would give me decent gaming performance ?

Would I need to change the motherboard ? It is an ECS Asertope3 1.0 , socket 775 LGA.

If you're looking to buy new, then you'll more than likely need to get a new motherboard, to cope with anything from C2D upwards..

EDIT: Just found your motherboard..running an hp machine? :) anyway, doesn't look like you'll be able to go anywhere beyond a Pentium D with that motherboard

C2D ? err , I'm a bit of a noob I'm afraid , what does that mean ? I'm guessing dual core.

Could you recommend a motherboard and processor bundle that wont break the bank but will handle the latest demands.

C2D = Core 2 Duo, or Dual Core.

What's the limit for breaking the bank? £200, £300?

What budget would you be looking at? and what's the rest of your spec? May be worth considering a graphics card upgrade if you're still running the same system as when you bought it..

My spec is pretty dire I'm afraid ! I upgraded the RAM and graphics card last year. Specs as follows :

P4 3.06ghz
2gb Ram
Nvidia Geforce 7600GT

I've been looking at this : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-180-OK

Looks a good price but will it handle the latest games demands easily ?

My budgets around £500 or the Mrs will go spare.
 
I would be a bit wary of longevity, however it will allow you to play current games without crawling between each frame.

By longevity do you mean reliability or the scope for upgrading when it starts falling behind ?

Any other systems on OCUK for the £500 mark that would be better in the long run ?
 
This would be a sweet rig for the price, and a lot more 'future proof'.

Thanks a lot for your time , it's much appreciated. I can stretch to that and it's about time I ditched my current piece of crap. Im gonna have to come up with a realistic , mock electrical fire to convince the Mrs though. Maybe I could sabotage the internet connection so she can't get on facebook and tell her the PC's fried.
 
For the price they're at at the moment, I might personally bump that 4850 up to the 4870..should still be well within your budget :)

Well I could ditch the PSU from that spec list and bung my 650w Corsair in anyway and use the difference to do that.
