Hi guys,

I have a computer that has developed a problem with the motherboard.

It is a "Tiny" with a P4M-800T motherboard.

It was working fine until a USB flash key was plugged into one of the 2 usb slots on the front of the machine at which point the system abruptly shut down.

Now, all that happens is the power switch illuminates when it is pressed but there is no other activity, no beeps no hard drive activity, fans do not come on etc.

Obviously this looks like damage has occured to the motherboard. Is there anything obvious to try or is it a bin job?

Cheers!

iirc you can get a asrock socket 478 motherboard for around £30ish from most online retailers.
should have the same specification as yours if not abit better.

Showing my ignorance here....

Socket 478 refers to the processor as far as I understand it?

Does it therefore mean that I have to go for a socket 478 board or can I use a later model?

Just thinking maybe worth getting something better and could also do with another one or two PCI slots.

478 refers to the socket on the motherboard which the processor fits in to (usually the pins are equal to the socket number but don't count them, it'll be obvious), you can also find out using CPU-Z but as your board appears to be dead that doesn't much help. If your CPU is socket 478 then yes, you'd need a socket 478 motherboard, an LGA775 processor would not fit a socket 478 board and a LGA775 board would not take a 478 processor.

Googling the mainboard model can also get the info you need.

There are a few snags here one is that your motherboard and case may be Micro-ATX (in which case a standard size board wouldn't fit) and also that the motherboard and power supply may not be standard fittings and wiring (as manufactured PCs like to use non standard parts).

Perhaps the best solution if you have the money available is to build an entirely new system rather than throw cash at something that is already over the hill and may cause more problems than it is worth.

Hmmm,

Plenty of food for thought there then.

Thanks very much for the advice, it's much appreciated. I will have a good look before I do anything.

Cheers :D
