P5B Deluxe, P5B Vista or Commando

Hi Guys,

I've reviewed shed loads of threads (well, 20+) to try and work out which motherboard to support a Q6600, 2GB 1ghz ram, with 3 raptors in raid.

I've read loads of reviews about the quad GT, but from personal preference, I prefer ASUS boards (unless I'm an ASUS goog, this would be my 6th asus board :D )

From what I've gathered thus far, the p5b vista edition is a cut down version of the deluxe with frilly bits (although I like the idea of a remote control and an extra display)

The reason I prefer the p5b is the higher FSB than the commando, except the commando has the Nvidia chipset?

Anyway, let loose and, thanks in advance :)

Good stuff, nice to see someone doing their homework

Hmm it didn't strike me in that way, looks a bit gimicky, dunno?

The Commando doesn't use the nVidia chipset? it uses the Intel® P965 (your thinking of the Striker maybe?).

The ASUS P5B-Deluxe is probably the best most mature solution in place right now not sure what the Commando offers more? I notice the prices are very similar now also. I'm using the P5B-Deluxe/Wifi and can't fault it, my mate just bought the straight P5B-Deluxe (minus Wifi) and he is flying.

Chipset by INTEL, made by ASUS = Bliss :)

Must agree, I had a DS3 before and since changed to the P5B and havnt looked back since. Very well put together, very stable board.

Thats interesting, so you are saying that you prefere the P5B-Deluxe to the DS3, anything in particular that you noticed after the change, i've not used the DS3 myself, just took one look at it and went *puke* ;)

What exactly do you want the mobo to do as far as overclocking goes...?

As far as it goes, I'm not much of an overclockers (as in I won't push it to its limits, but I will overclock), the motherboards going to be used mainly for 3d rendering (thus the Q6600 and the raptors), I think the only other thing I'm looking for is features.

Just to throw more confusion in the mix, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the p5b deluxe, premium (spell?) and wi-fi, have I just missed something completely silly (like the commando being based on the nvidia chipset :o )

Again, cheers for your help guys :)

The cold boot issues I was having with the DS3 were enough to tip it for me :(

That's a poor reason to reject a board that's £50 cheaper! Function over form ;)
Yeah in some respects I agree with you but I'm quite happy to admit that the way a piece of hardware looks will 'influence' my purchasing decison, and judging by the success of the iMac I think there are quite a lot of consumers that are the same.

When it comes to the crunch would I take an item that has less function but looks great, most likely not, but if I can take an item that performs better 'and' looks better then sure I'm happy to pay a bit extra.

Again its not worth a huge debate, its just an opinion and my opinion is the DS3 is a fugly motherboard :p

I myself am heavily influenced by how something looks, as long as it is something that is regularly visible and "on show". E.g. my MP3 player, I care how that looks as it's out all the time so if it looked like a pink willy then I'd care.

Motherboards however are shut away inside your case and, unless you have a clear window through which it's clearly visible, I wouldn't care if my motherboard looked uttlerly ridiculous as long as it did what I wanted it to.

Each to own I suppose :) I actually got my DS3P cause I thought it'd look cool through my side window with a blue cold cathode. I hasten to add that I made this decision after reading many reviews and having a look at the spec so the blue-ness wasn't the primary reason. :)

Okay, so far I've learnt one thing, the Vista board is too overpriced and has had people report of dodgy goings on with the audio controller (although I'm fairly sure its the same as the P5B)

The other thing is that the commando seems to have a few more features, at extra cost, if you took the features away from the commando, would there be much difference between the commando and the P5B?

Again Cheers for your help :)

Nope. They both use the P965 chipset.

I can't help believing that I would feel shafted after a couple of days of running a Commando.
