Hi there,

I'm hoping somebody out there can help me!

I've had a very unsuccessful day trying to get my system to work 100%, all the more annoying as I thought I already had ;)

The basics are, I have a

Conroe E6600
2GB XMS6400C4
Gainward Bliss 7900GT Golden Sample
Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1ty
Antec Neo 550W

I thought I'd run 3Dmark 2006 today.
To cut a long story short, it doesn't make it through the Deep Freeze section.
I went to the BIOS, and even set everything to auto.... it was never overclocked, but I had manual RAM timings for my XMS6400 RAM.

So, everything at auto, nothing clocked, no *** or anything of the sort.
Spent HOURS today trying different settings. Underclocked the 7900GT as well, still no joy. Just get.. hard to explain, flashy textures, freezes, usually after this my monitor goes into standby. Sometimes it makes it back into Windows, but with corruption/screen flashing. Usually a hard reset is required to get it going again.

It plays other games fine, and well. I did notice in the Half Life 2 Lost Coast stress test that, just after the camera flies up the stairs, and goes into the courtyard, that there were a few coloured squares in the sky... every time... which never happened on my previous system (P4 3Ghz HT / GF6600GT)
Don't get this in game though, just during the stress test.

Anyway, to cut the story short, OC'ers have given me an RMA, but warned me that I should confirm it's the card first.

Fair enough. The guy on the phone sounded concerned about my PSU, but the Antec Neo 550 states that it's SLi ready, and I'm only using one card, so I'd think it was up to the job. It's only a few months old. I have the card connected to the PSU directly.

So, the only other thing I could think of is this PEGLINK.

I've seen it mentioned here and there, and the Asus website/manual proudly states that the board has PEG LINK. I just can't find the settings, anywhere.

I'm currently running the newest BIOS, 309, upgraded today from 211,
I flashed back to 209 and tried 3dmark again, but always still crashes at Deep Freeze.

In neither bios can I find any mention of PEGLINK, so I'd like to think that as *** AI etc are all on auto, that it would be off?

So, I'm guessing a dud card, but want to check all the possibilities first before sending it back.

So, please could anybody tell me where PEG LINK can be found in the P5B bios? I'd be most greatful. Or any other tips on what could be causing my gfx card to corrupt/freeze like that?

Sorry for the long post,
it's been a long day, and I wanted to get as much info down as possible, in case anybody can be of assistance.

The card is now off to my brother for testing in his Dual Xeon machine.
I guess if it fails in there too, it is faulty... but if not... ?

Thanks for taking the time to read, and for any advice you can give,
V1N.

Many thanks for your reply.

I've been through the BIOS many times today, including the Northbridge Config.

I didn't spot that option though

All I can remember is seeing PEG/PCI option, and PEG x1 option.

Maybe I was looking too hard, and looked straight through it.

I'm not at that machine right now, but I'll certainly take another look, earliest opportunity. I'll be hellish if it's there now, as really, I've looked loads today, and spent some time in the Northbridge Config, setting my RAM timings. :o

Thanks again, I do appreciate your help

Hi V1N, can I ask where you got bios 309 for the P5B from?

Any chance of a link?

Thanks. :)

EDIT: Found it! The wonders of Ctrl F5 on the Asus website!! :)

It is in Chipset, then North Bridge Configuration, then PEG Link Mode.

As I thought, it certainly isn't on mine

and nothing to be found in Frequency settings

Maybe it only appears with certain graphics cards?
It certainly wasn't there for the 7900GT, and I'm currently running a borrowed PCX5900, while my Brother tests the 7900GT on his system before sending back.

Strange, the Asus website/manual states it has PEG LINK.
I'd also written to Asus, and got this email this morning

Dear Friend :

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

My name is ZYC, and I would be assisting you today.

Sir, this board does not support PEG LINK MODE,

no bios option related with this.

For your Video crash issue,

if you use some software, like Rivatuner,

to adjust the video card GPU/memory speed down a little,

will that fix the game issue?

Hmmm, well... :(

I have also been discussing this in another thread

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17615262

and it appears I'm agreed with, that it's the card.
I did everything I could think of, have to wait and see what happens in my Brothers system.

Thanks for the assist... and maybe one day I'll find this PEG LINK ;)

OK, glad you found it.
Though I still got presented with a CPU FAN ERROR - PRESS F1 error this morning ;)

Ah well, not important, the fan does work, albeit rather slowly.
I thought performance mode was meant to make it run faster. All settings run mine at 869rpm idle and something stupid like 879 under load. CPU max temp so far is 53deg, so I guess it doesn't matter. ;) (standard hs/fan)

Not that I want to contradict tech support but if your board doesn't have PEG link then why is it in the specifications and listed features?
http://www.asus.com.tw/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1178&l1=3&l2=11&l3=307

You sure you don't just need to scroll down the page on the screen with PEG Port Configuration? :p

lol, I knew that one was coming.

No, there are no further options below what's shown in my screenshot.
When it was set to auto there were only a few items on the screen, and no PEG LINK option. It just expanded out when I set my memory timings again this morning. Still, all the options are on the screen, none below, and I'm still nonethewiser on how to find out of PEG LINK is causing problems.

I agree, the tech support reply was strange, sure, I can't find any mention of PEG LINK in my BIOS, in both of the newest versions.... yet the manual, and the website proudly state that it has PEG LINK.

Maybe there's a mixup and it's only the deluxe that has Peg Link?

A mystery to be sure... to PEG LINK or not to PEG LINK!
Which came first, the manual/website or the board/bios ;)

One says yes, the other no!

No wonder people find it hard to configure and optimize their hardware, when the bloody options are missing ;)

It is amusing but seriously speaking that is misleading/incorrect advertising, ok so lacking Asus PEG link isn't exactly end of the world but what if they say oh oops, Core 2 Duo isn't one of the features of this board? It not very impressive to say the least
