I got this setup not really knowing very much at all about the nuances of serious overclocking, hoping to learn as I crash along
Right out the box, I was able to alter the FSB from 266 to 350 (at 10x multiplier) and even had this stable for hours with my chosen 3D apps (intensive multi-frame renders in Vue 6 + Bryce), though the fan noise (Q-Fan 'Optimal') got a little much after a while as temps neared 58C. All I altered elsewhere was a couple o'steps up on the VCore. Idle back to 41C or about.
I would like to run my memory faster because I hear bandwidth is cool for 3D apps (right?) I have 2GB Corsair Dominator 8500 memory, but when I run at PC8500 the best I manage is about 10 x 285 with the memory runing at 570MHz 1:2 Any higher than 285, even 286 and I get BSOD's
If I try any less CPU multiplier I get no further. Can any experienced clockers advise me of how to max the memory bandwidth of my QX6700 more than I currently am?
Am I right that 285 * 10 at PC8500 is better than say 3500MHz at PC6400?
btw I am still very happy with the system, and many of my benchies often times are great -its just I don't really understand the difference between the FSB in the BIOS and the 'memory speed' -I am baffled a bit at getting the best overall setup.
