I've set my FSB to 400MHz, I'm using a Q6600 CPU with a multiplier of 8 and 4GB of PC2-8500C5D memory.

I was wondering whether I should increase the FSB Strap to 400MHz and get a 1:1 ratio between the FSB and memory, letting me lower the voltage on the memory, or leave the Strap at 266MHz forcing me to increase the voltage to the memory and most likely the Northbridge.

I've heard it a few times that Intel CPU's benefit (suggesting AMD's don't???) from a 1:1 ratio but hopefully someone here also has some knowledge on the matter.

To elaborate further, when the FSB Strap is 266MHz I have the memory on 500MHz, and the vdimm is 2.1. If the Strap is set to 400MHz I put the memory to 400MHz letting me have the vdimm on 1.8...

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is, is there a major difference in performance when:

Lower FSB Strap = 1:1 FSB memory ratio and lower voltages
Higher FSB Strap = ?:? FSB memory ratio and higher voltages

Apologies if this has been answered a million times before.

Funnily enough I have left the Strap on [Auto] for now, so the FSB : DRAM is 3:4 at the moment. This memory seems very unstable though, for a while it's fine then Windows starts going ape, it won't pass Windows Memory Diagnostic. After reseating all the sticks it seems alright .

At the moment I've got Static Read Control disabled and Transaction Booster disabled with a Relax Level of 3, both settings seem to mess with the memory a lot.

Hi TomL,

I'm not sure how much overclocking you have done before but if you haven't done a lot I feel you are getting quite caught up in the details? . . . some of the options you are messing with are quite advanced and normally fall under the Fine-Tuning period of your clocking . . .not something to mess with while getting to grips with the basics.

When you have time have a read of this thread by eva2000 who is an aussie overclocking nut, I met him around 2003 and he helped me break through all the technical mystery that is currently *baffling* you! :p

ASUS P5K Deluxe - Intel P35 Bearlake + E6600 B1 / Q6600 B3

I should really make a structured post like that because it would save me having to repeat the same information over and over and over again heh! :o

To be honest I think I just have a hardware problem, as everything works fine for a while, Linpack stable 2 hours, Memtest 13 passes, then eventually goes **** up. As soon as I get the money I'll go i7...

fixed! :)

dum, dum, dum . . . . another one bites the dust! :p

As hilariously late a reply as this is, I can tell you my RAM was to blame. Thorough exchanging of the modules in each slot confirmed they were either faulty from the begining, I killed them with static, was over ambitious with timings or all of the above. Testing was done using all stock settings, individual modules at a time, in each memory bank, using Memtest86+.

Suffice to say, I'm stuck with two of my old "good" 1024MB sticks, as opposed to two 2048MB sticks. Running on 2GB is a pretty miserable existance, but the knowledge of what was actually wrong is comforting.
