P5K-Pro won't reboot! - FIXED!

Ok so i've put together my new build as from this spec :

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17850923

Now the ONLY problem I seem to have is that it simply won't reboot.

Here's what happens. It will boot everytime no problem. However when i've installed drivers that require a restart, or just if I want to restart for any reason then it shuts down like it's ready to re-start, but just sits there, fans whiring, lights on, monitor goes into standby and nothing happens.

Now to get back running I have to hold the power button till it turns off. Then at switch on after this has happened the bios shows an error saying 'overclocking failed, press F1 to setup, F2 to load defaults, etc..'

Now this isn't overclocked it's @ 2.4G nothing changed what so ever.

Any ideas? this is doing my head in.

Thanks

I had a similar issue or appearance of the problem, and as someone suggested its because of a faulty USB connected component that was not repsonding during the boot process.

I would disconnect all unnecessary USB components such as printer etc, keyboard, anything USB and try again.

Also ensure internal components are properly seated in there respective slots. CPU, RAM and GFX etc.

BTW i have just ordered that board too. Should arrive today :D

THe only USB device connected is my Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse. I'll try it in the PS2 port (if it has one?) or another USB port.

I don't think thats the issue though, i'll try tonight.

I installed mine last night too. Having major issues with it. Itll boot fine one minute, the next itll just restart.

One of the times it restarted it gave me the same overclocking failed message, and again, like you, it was running completely stock. Rebooted again, the message didnt appear this time. Its just weird, everything is intermittent.

Also i HATE the friggin marvell adapter IDE config setup... is there anyway to get rid of this nonsense? I have one SATA hard drive, simple. The marvell adapter says 'cannot detect hard drive' or something, yet if i press F8 for boot options and select the hard drive, it boots up fine?

not impressed with this board, it has the latest BIOS too...

I found the P5K to be a bit fiddly to set up as a new build recently, but once it's up and running, so far I've found it to be an excellent bit of kit.

If you are coming from something a little less complex and this is your first "enthusiast" board, it can be a bit problematic and overwhelming ( which I found coming from a basic 775 Asrock board ) , but its well worth persevering with.

Have a read through the massive P5K owners thread, loads of info and problems solved in there ( including a good few that helped me out recently on the last few pages !! ) :-

Ok so reading that it appears that the reboot issue is what happens when you've entered a bad overclock setting. Now I haven't changed anything, everything is auto and it still does it.

Please can anyone help with this?

FIXED!!!

I decided to update the Bios to the latest version (which happens to be today). Once it updated it went to reboot, just sat there like before :(

So I switched off, and cleared the cmos to start fresh.

Switched back on, and went into the bios, no overclocking error this time. Now under auto dram settings it listed my memory as being 18-5-5-5, should be 15-5-5-5. So I left it at that and saved and exited. Booted into windows, went for reboot and boom, back she popped and rebooted!! YAY

I'll try dropping the timings back to 15-5-5-5 to see what happens as thats the RAM spec.

Still it's the only bug I had so i'm happy. Now to clock it to 3Ghz :D

On an older board like a P5K you almost always ned to upgrade the BIOS after the first install. It's not a bug, it's driver/CPU incompatability issues that have been resolved over time.

Hardly an old board is it with a 11/07 bios in it. I guess changes happen quickly though. Still got it running at 3.2Ghz now :D. Although it crashed running 3Dmark after the CPU test so not sure what thats about. I've run prime for about 40mins total with no errors so it's a start.

Gotta get Vista on it tommorow as my XP home licence has run out so i'll start from fresh with that.

I had one last week.....just would not boot up. Especially if the PCI-E graphics card was in the top slot. Moved card to 2nd slot, flashed bios, then moved card back to top slot. Worked like a champ :)

Sorted my issues too. All related to voltage supplies :(

cpu is around 1.325v now, dram is 2.26v and NB is around 1.57v now. No more issues.

all the 'auto' options on these are useless, makes you wonder why they're there in the first place :p
