I've setup my below spec and set it to AC97 audio in BIOS, install Realtek 6.0.1 drivers for Vista 32 and the speakers work but the microphone does'nt. I've change the BIOS to HDef Audio and the speakers still work but the microphone does not. The only thing is that in HD audio there apperas to be 'channel chatter' on the mic but it can't pick up anything else. I've ensured the mic is not muted in set up but still nothing. In the hardware system settings its recognises the mic and I go into the setup but still does not pick up sound. Should I be installing anything specifioc for the mic to work from the 8.1 channel (pink socket) as the only driver I can see in the setup is the Realtek HD audio driver.

Any known problems with the P5KC mobo and microphone under Vista?

I have done. It makes not difference whether I use the onboard connector for the front panel or the rear 8.1 connection.

is there any spare front panel mic ports on the board? if so they will need a jumper on them.

The only one is the onbaord AAFP front panel connector or the rear (pink) mic input port. The only thing I can think is its a driver or config problem.

In Vista the Mic is recognised and it says the driver Realtek Audio 6.0.1 is working correctly but I can't see that it is. Does there need to be a specific mic driver or just the Realtek Audio driver?

what sort of mic is it?

if it's a proper pro mic, then you might need a seperate driver, if it's just a cheap PC mic it should work, although it should work either way really

Its a cheap PC headset mic with a 3.5mm pin plug

I asume all the latest drivers are installed, for the motherboard and realtek sound,

does the mic require batteries or anything like that, do you know that the mic works? could test it on a different machine, and do you get no sound output either? or is it just input?

Tried the mic on another machine and it was intermittant so probably a faulty mic but have ordered a new one to try just in case. Should be here Tues/Wed so will update you then. Thanks.

np, hope it works for you. is it the same mic your getting? if it still doesn't work it could be some kind of incompatibility or something wrong that particular mic, although i doubt it tbh.

OK, problem sorted! Fisrtly it was a faulty headset mic which I managed to pinpoint a break in the wire. Secondly, the balance setting in vista was turned down and the mic was disabled in the speaker section of the hardware sound settings. I enabled this and setup the gain to +10db and adjusted the balance and all works fine. Only thing I would say is play around with the settings and ensure others can here you clearly. Try recording to sound recorder and playing back as you can get lag on the sound and distortion if the db gain is too high or the balance is set too high also. But the opposite way will make it too quiet.

Thanks yantorsen for your input.
