Yo!

If I did this upgrade, would I need to re-install windows & all my software?
Or could I get away with just switching the board (preferable)?

Plus, would the bog standard p5q give me good results with a q6600?

reinstall windows is the best bet, as its a different chipset
intel chipsets clock pretty well and fairly solid than nvidia, only thing you will lose will be sli, plus you get crossfire for ati cards

You will not get away with just changing the board. Windows would throw a hissy fit as soon as you started up. You could try uninstalling all of your drivers and then doing a repair installation. I believe it leaves all your files intact but "cleans" up the windows installation. I'm not sure about that though and not sure it would work either. I have always gone for a fresh installation myself.

I'm about to do exactly the same upgrade ! I am certainly hopeful that I will not need to re-install. I plan to uninstall video drivers, then all nvidia drivers, and I reckon there is a 90% chance it should be fine. If not, a repair install will do it. Only as a last resort will I do a complete re-install of Windows and all my apps, which will take a whole day. This is Vista, it may be a bit smarter than XP in this regard. Or not.....

id personally do a backup of all your important stuff and then format and reinstall windows. ive heard of people upgrading from nvidia 680i-780i and having trouble (theyre basically the same board except 780i has a pcie2.0 bridge chip) as the op is changing to intel a fresh start would be better.

My upgrade from the P5N-E SLI to the P5Q deluxe was a complete success.

I uninstalled the Catalyst drivers, uninstalled all Nvidia drivers. Then with the new mobo fitted, Vista booted up fine. Initially no DVD drive or USB, but it then found them, then I installed drivers off the ASUS CD and installed latest Catalyst drivers, and all is perfect ! Vista (OEM) wanted to be re-activated, and I chose to re-activate on-line, and it re-activated ! No need to call MS or anything
