This is a pretty simple concept to grasp, I need a motherboard, CPU and some RAM. I've decided to go P67 because the reviews for the 2500k are excellent and I want to be able to overclock it - and I see little point in the Z68 chipset. My MAXIMUM budget is £400 but I'd rather stay as far away from that as I can. I will not be using CrossfireX of SLI in the future, I will be clocking the CPU as much as possible and I would like the mobo to have some nice onboard audio as I don't have a soundcard.

CPU: Definitely the i5 2500k (www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-360-IN) Some benchmarks show it outperforming the i7 2600k in some games - btw this is for a PC used mainly for gaming.

Mobo: Possibly this? Asus P8P67 (www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-447-AS)

RAM: I have no idea. Something like this? (www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-063-GS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1387) I notice the 1155 RAM seems to be much cheaper than the 1156 RAM, is this true or am I seeing things?

Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Fledge.

Sockets 1156 and 1155 take the same RAM (DDR3 dual channel). 2133 MHz is a bit overkill, usually 1600 MHz or even 1333 MHz is fine, especially considering you don't need to overclock the RAM to overclock the CPU with Sandy Bridge.

At the moment I have some RAM from my 1156 build, but they are specified as 1.65V - AFAIK 1155 only takes 1.5V RAM.

I bought...

i7 2600K with a MSI P67A-GD65, and Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) [CMX4GX3M2A1600C9]

exept i got the 8gig kit, and im loving it ( so far ) ;)

I have the above CPU and Mobo, different RAM but it doesn't make much difference. Im assuming you have an aftermarket CPU cooler so you can just go with the OEM version ? unless you need the extented warranty.

I chose the retail CPU purely for the two extra years warranty.
What are MSI like for RMA service? I'm thinking about buying the Asus because they now have an RMA centre in the UK and I've had horrific RMA experience sin the past.

The Corsair XMS3 looks like a great option, and at only 1.40V! Although it also says it runs at 1.60V on SandyBridge -- even though the P8P67 is specified with 4x 1.50V DIMMs, will there be a problem there?

EDIT: I just found these little beauts -- www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-290-CS XMS3 2x4GB sticks on offer this week :D should I go for it?

XMS3 is very good RAM. 8GB may be a bit overkill at the moment but at least your future proofing your system.

Also I'd choose MSI and Gigabyte over ASUS when it comes to the P67 chipset. The latest BIOS updates may have fixed the inital problems with ASUS boards though.

What sort of problems were the Asus boards experiencing and does that mean I'd have to flash a new BIOS version if I did go Asus?

Yep you'd have to flash the mobo. Although there's a chance you'd have to do that on any mobo you buy.

what issues?...

Mobo not powering on being one big issue. Motherboard forum used to be full of threads with people experiencing problems with ASUS mobos (used to as I don't venture there much lately). Do a search for P8P67 threads in the motherboard forum to get a rough idea of the problems people were having.

reaper... your ram is rated at 1.6v while the p67 recommend using 1.5v, isn't that a bit risky??

unfortunately OCUK has a poor range for 1.5v ram compared to other shops so i can't link any useful ram on here.

After having a chat with an ocuk sales bloke about voltages I've come up with this:

b3tyjl.jpg

-I chose the retail CPU because £6 for two years extra warranty is brilliant.

-The Asus mobo is because it's a damn good product - another ocuk sales bloke tells me they have a 2600k @ +4Ghz on pretty much the default bios; and they had new stock only two weeks ago directly from Asus so any problems have more than likely been ironed out.

-The RipJawsX are rated at 1.45-1.55V so there will be no voltage related trouble there as the mobo's dimms are @1.5V. He recommended I don't use the Corsair XMS3 for SandyBridge as they aren't tested at sub 1.50 so there's no guarantee I'd be able to run the in that region -- anything over 1.50V on 1155 can cause long-term damage.

I hope someone has learned from this - thanks all :D

If your going for that Asus and CPU I would recommend you look at this bundle http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-014-OP&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1858. Same MOBO and CPU for cheaper.

I think theres no difference between the G-Skill and Corsair. You should be going for the Corsair XMS3 as it been tested by many people and working for them at 1.50V 1600MHZ. So if you go for that ram youll be saving £10.

I'm running the xms3 ram at 1.5v at 1600 on the asus P8P67 and so are many others in the forum. Also it was the pro and deluxe versions of the asus boards that were getting the bad press. Think 8GB is overkill but your call. :-)
