P67A-UD7-B3 SSD issue

Hi,

My o/s is on an SSD, and since swapping my B3 over both the BIOS and Windows lose it on occasion. Cycling the power brings it back to life. SATA control is set to IDE in the BIOS, however it was before on my B2 and I had no issues. On once occasion everything was working in Windows but running reaaaaaly slowly - Windows would appear in slow motion. A reboot cured this.

Any ideas? All connections have been checked, but seeing as it as a periodic problem I doubt this is the cause anyway.

I saw simular symptons when I swappd my P8P67 with a UD7 and had to reload. But I put this down to being different mobos not playing nice.

I would enable ACHI and see if that sorts your issue. If not take a Image of your OS and reload it.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried all sorts of stuff I found on the internet - it turns out this is a known issue with the C300 SSD. I tried to reinstall Windows but it failed when the SSD went AWOL. I'm going to RMA the drive.

What you need to do is install your OS using IDE and then once completed then set AHCI via bios. Try that first before you go to the hassle of the return.

1Day, that was one of the things I tried, it involves a reg tweak before setting AHCI in the BIOS. That didn't work so I went down the reinstall route but the install failed (froze due to SSD issue).

Sorry to hear that mate. Let me pull a C300 out and do a quick install of OS and see what is what.

I had the same issue. But there is a fix for it. And here it is

Change from IDE to AHCI after Installation

I borrowed this from Bikebert's guide.

Change from IDE to AHCI Mode after Installation

Information: AHCI stand for Advance Host Controller Interface. AHCI is a hardware mechanism that allows software to communicate with Serial ATA (SATA) devices (such as host bus adapters) that are designed to offer features not offered by Parallel ATA (PATA) controllers, such as:
Hot-Plugging
Native Command Queuing (NCQ) -might improve computer/system/hard disk responsiveness, especially in multi-tasking environment
You can read more about AHCI mode HERE

Instruction: There is one way to fix this, although you need to have knowledge of registry editing.
The detailed steps from Microsoft website are as follows:..........

Thanks for that, much appreciated. The problem I have is that I have now reinstalled Windows to another drive, as the reinstall to the C300 failed. I'm now trying to locate the right drivers so I can F6 during install and use AHCI mode.

Am I missing something or has the OP swapped his motherboard for a different revision and not reinstalled his OS? If that is the case, why does this thread exist? Just reinstall the OS.

That would be standard practice would it not?

I didn't reinstall the o/s initially. But, as I said, when I tried to after having the SSD issue I couldn't - because I had the SSD issue.

To recap - I can't install Windows to this drive, at least in IDE mode (which I should be able to). I am trying to find the Windows 7 .inf driver files so I can try and install in AHCI mode but so far I am having no luck.

Does anyone know how to unpack an .exe?

Regardless of the above, I shouldn't be having to jump through hoops like this just to get a drive working. Crucial have acknowledged that this is a known issue so I'd be happier just RMA'ing the drive.

Fair play.

You can unpack a .EXE with Winrar if you want, but assuming you are using the Intel controller, just grab the F6 install drivers from the intel download center.

I can't find it :(

Probably me just being dumb but I've had no joy on the Intel or Gigabyte sites - just .exes.

I've tried unpacking the .exe but it only seems to half work and there's .infs to be found.

Right, I've figured it out.

The F6 Intel RST driver files do not list the 6 series as compatible, but are the same version (10.1.0.1008) as the 6 series .exe downloads. So I should be able to pre-install the drivers and get Windows installed with the system drive in AHCI mode. Then, when the 0007 firmware is released for the C300 I'll flash the drive (which can be done under AHCI in this version).

I don't think I'll get a good RMA result as I'm pretty sure the drive is fine under other circumstances. It'll just cost me postage and time.

Well, reinstalled in AHCI mode and all seemed well for a while, and then Windows totally locked up. Then the system wouldn't boot (posts, then locks up starting Windows).

Gonna RMA it and hope OCUK can replicate the fault.
