Hello all,

I got a new Samsung 840 SSD today. The plan for this drive is to get rid of one of my gaming Seagate HDD drivers and have a faster experince.

I took the Seagate out, plugged the SDD in and it was not recognized. I rebooted and it was recognized, I went upstairs to get a drink came back down and nothing.

Dodgy SATA cable maybe? Any thoughts?

Yeah I am using the a SATA cable that provides both power and data, it also has a Molex that comes of off it. I assume I don't need to plug that in?

I have not tried swapping it with another drive yet and it is plugged into one of the six red SATA ports.

I should try a Marvell port?

The Marvell ports are for SAS drives so I'm not sure how they'd play with your SSD, though apparently SATA is physically compatible with SAS but SAS is not physically compatible with SATA.

The cable you're using is an SAS cable designed for use in the Marvell ports so you could try plugging that cable into an orange socket on the motherboard. You'd need to make sure that the controller is enabled in the BIOS and may have to install the drivers.

Or try sticking with the Intel port but use a standard SATA data cable and a SATA power connector from your power supply.

Edit:

Looking at the SAS cable it looks like may need a molex power cable plugging in to provide the power. I'm not sure though, just going by the picture.
