P6X58D-E Lan port issues

Hi All

I had quite a severe elctrical storm here today, during which my internet link went down. I powered off all my router an pc equipment and made sure that there was no damage etc. (heard quite a bang outside)

Now, the internet service is back but the PC that I was on at the time cannot connect to my router. In fact the device manager in Windows 7 says that there isn't even a Network port.

The Lan port is there and both the lights are on solid (i.e. no flashing).

Can you a suggest a course of action?

Ah, what have I checked already? As follows:

- The router is working - the other pc I have hardwired is working. (I'm typing on it)
- I've checked the cable to the router and that is fine.
- I've checked the router ports and the are working.
- I've been in the bios and disabled and then enabled the 'Marvel lan 1 port'
- I've restored windows to a point 2 days ago

I think that the crux is that windows can't see the port but I may be wrong etc.

As per the title it's a P6X58D-E modo. It hidden in an OC Ultima Carbon rig.

Hope you can help!

Best Regards

Hi All

Any ideas yet?

I've tried reloading the ethrnet driver but to no avail.

The Network adapter is still not showing up in the device listing... :(:(:(

Any pointers will be graciously received.

Thanks

Hello - Me again....

Well the Network adapters are available in the 'hidden adapters' view! The Marvell adapter is in the listing but without a driver path.

I've updated the driver using the Marvell installer and via the Windows boot disk repair option. All very peculiar.

I've also disconnected and reconnected power to the mobo.

Any way, any assistance be it solutions or pointers would be great help. I'm trying to avoid a reinstallation of windows.

Thanks

Yes try taking out the mb battery, leave it out for 30mins may need overnight, press and hold in front panel power button to fully discharge the mb of power, put battery back in then load optimized defaults in BIOS,

Maybe try right mouse click on the adapters, uninstall / remove them, also drivers. After that do rescan from the menu, see if it comes up again.

Also the BIOS reset with battery might help indeed.

Hi All

Sorry for not responding yesterday, but I was hosting a 3 year old's birthday party.... the upside is that the toys are getting better.

Wazza, Vir, thanks for your suggestions!

I tried the battery disconnect overnight with no success I'm afraid.

I've tried uninstalling the ports Vir but windows 7 doesn't let you. The Network Adapter itself isn't actually in the listiing so I can obviously uninstall that. What is interesting is that I found a thread on the Interweb that talked of fiddling with the registry. I found the area and made some adjustments, but the .inf file (that triggers a re-profiling of any hardware) is not editable even as an administrator. It is in Vista and XP but not 7!

I'll try an upgrade installation tonight and hope that it will trigger a Lan port reconfig and software / driver install. The port is there and that lights are on, it's just windows throwing a wobbly.

I'll report back on the updgrade success as it'll be worth having the results searchable on the forum for others.

Thanks for your help thus far. Wish me luck!! [cue: dramatic music!!]

Well after some jiggerypokery it's official - the LAN port is dead, which is a real shame. As they don't make the 1366 boards, I've upgraded and gone for a new processor.

One thing I will say and I'm sure that other's will agree; the biggest stumbling block that I encountered was my one ignorance around the core system and also the infrastructure behind Windows 7. No longer - it's time to school up!

Thanks for your assistance!

Very true Wazza, and that was my first thought, but my case is jammed with components and the space with the card could fit would be too close to my GFX cards and other bits. Airflow is a must and all that.

So, all I need now is a buyer for my 1366 mobo, i7-980X processor with the LAN port deficiency - one careful owner with the added feature of it being touched by the hand of Thor. :D

Wazza - I host games via dedicated servers and have experienced packet loss issues before using wifi hence the hardwiring. I hope no one thinks that this act of chance is a good excuse to perform an unjustified upgrade!! Perish the thought!!! It's not true I tell you!! (....Don't tell the wife!)

Vir - Once I've got the new mobo and processor up and running I'll look at the going rate for the processor. Real shame to be losing it as it goes like sh** off a shovel (@4.2Ghz)...

haha its ok,i was just thinking of things you could try, even if you sell the board you can suggest an add in card or usb stick to get around the broken onboard lan

The new board is all installed and working well.

Went for a Asus X79 Sabertooth board and a i7-3960X Sandybeach-E processor (so no holiday this year - don't tell the wife!). The board refit was a superb experience! Bedding the processor in was a smashing experience too. Had to reinstall windows 7 which was a chore, but I'm all up and running again. Going to look around the set up and try different things

I took it all apart again last night and put it back together. Marking where the cables were was the key.

Thanks again for the guidance chaps!
