P965 Chipset and Dual/Single Channel Operation When Running 4 DIMMs

quick question, I've been running on my P5B Deluxe

2x2gb Reapers

2x1gb Reapers

I always thought they were running in dual channel mode

but I read yesterday on an old P5B thread that if you use 2 pairs of different sizes - the larger DIMMS will only run in dual channel up to the size of the smaller pair ?

ie the 2x1gb will be running in dual channel

and 2x1gb (of the 2gb dimms) will be running in dual channel

and the remaining 2x1gb of the 2gbs will only be running in single channel ?

does it make any difference to performance ? I'm sort of thinking I shouldn't have added the additional 2x1gb dimms ?

What you say about dual/single channel appears to be true, it's mentioned in the Asus manual for a start.

The performance difference between single and dual channel isn't massive. If you're actually doing anything that uses more than 4GB then you're much better off having the 6GB available whether it's running in single channel or not.
