Hi all,

I've just taken an absolute gamble on a very very cheap P9X79 Pro motherboard...why so cheap? Reported as one set of memory banks, when populated cause the system not to post, the black banks, blue banks supposedly work fine.

My first question is, where do I start looking for the root cause of the fault? Socket? Traces? Etc..

Second question is, it has no invoice or original packaging, but presumably still under warranty (x79 is ~20 months old, asus warranty is 3+ years!) How do I go about setting up an rma direct with asus? Or even finding out if I can rma it?

Thanks :)

you might get lucky with an rma,if the board was purchased abroad though they wont accept it,so I don't know where the board originally came from?

ive had one refused from asus as they said it didn't come from the uk

things to check regarding faulty memory slots are cpu socket for bent pins, chances are its that, can be broken traces or even certain capacitors that blow as ive also had an x58 repaired with one dead ram slot and on the repair invoice that came back it lists replacement capacitor

fill in an rma request form from asus website, they will get back to you

Sweet, I'll give it a good look over before I put parts in it.

The rma side of things was just if it completely dies (especially running 1.5v core and 1.75v memory on benches.

Can asus tell everything they need to know from the s/n? So provided it still has the serial and was purchased in the UK I should be good for rma if required.

The seller has given me a 30 day faulty returns cover too and seems like a genuine guy :)

Alas, back to normal atx!! Can ditch stupidly big case!!

Sounds good :)

Now just to track down an I/O shield and I should be sorted.

My 3rd x79 board, hopefully I don't find any major niggles with this one.

Yeah found a few, just need to sift through them to see which ones are on the other side of the world or not :p
