Sky came and installed Sky+ in the living room today, and they ended up leaving our normal digibox rather than taking it. It was actually a replacement unit that sky installed on Wednesday, but we made a few complaints and ended up getting Sky+ on the cheap and had it installed today.

What can we do with this digibox, can we set it up in another room or use it as a freeview box or anything? How much is it worth? (Pace 2500N)

in order for it to do anything, it needs a satellite signal. In order for a signal to be received, you need to change the LNB in the satellite to provide more feeds

And sky wont let you just add another feed and not pay for it, so you could get multiroom for £10 / month

do nothing with it

or sell it on ebay. Think prolly £30/£40 ish ?

You can use it to get freeview, have a look to see if you have another out put on the LNB,most are quad now esp if you have + installed. If you do have another feed, then run a cable to your next room and plug the box in, then get another freesat card (15-20 notes) and hey presto freeview. You only pay £10 for multiroom if you want the same package as your sky plus box.

Last week we had lightning strike our local electricity substation and it left a lot of people in the area with quite a few damaged appliances.

It fired BOTH our Sky boxes, even though they were protected by surge protectors. It seems nothing can really protect against a semi-direct lightning strike!

I phoned Sky up and they wanted a small fortune to replace my boxes. As we are not insured right now, due to an adminstrative error, we had no choise but to pay it... until I randomly asked a friend if he had a spare box... HE HAD 2! So we now have Sky again!

Moral of the story is... As the box is not worth much more than £30 really anyway, it is probably best to keep it just in case something bad happens!

I am a little confused here.

I am possibly looking to buy a sceond sky digi box to replace one that is on the blink (keeps freezing on certain channels, needs full power down for a few minutes to restore it) but my main question is with the viewing card.

I once took my viewing card to the father - in-laws to watch the footy (he didn't had sky sports) I put in my card into his digi box and the box refused saying it wasn't the right card for the box.

If I were to get a spare digi box and insert my current viewing card, how do I get it to work with all my channels ?
Sorry if its a noob question !! :O

Just phone Sky up on the number it says on screen (08702 404040) and tell them you have a new box and it says to call them. They will ask for your viewing card number and box serial number (you get them from the Sky Guide menu) and then activate it for you. Takes about 30 seconds :)

When our area was experiencing power cuts due to strong winds in winter, my Sky+ box decided that it'd forget where the default transponder was, and say "No Satellite Signal...", a reboot didn't cure it, and there was no music in the EPG. Thought it was a gonna, until I went into Installation and it reset all the figures...phew! Wonder if thats happened to anyone else and they've chucked the box...
