I was told my a friend that my slow internet could be down to packet loss, he sent me a link to a program to see if i am suffering from it, (ping plotter btw) i have entered a few .co.uk websites and i seem to be getting 11% and 25% in some, what does this mean and i have emailed virgin media about it, but that was about a week ago and no reply, how do i sort it out?

sorry this is an old post, but i rang virgin media and they said that theres definatly a problem with my line, but i need to remove my router and connect straight to the modem instead because they think my router (linksys) is the problem, could that really cause it.?

It's possible.

Tho 'Try using supplied hardware' is probably the first answer on their script sheet.

I wouldn't hold your breath as far as NTL are concerned.

I had horrific packetloss / latency spikes during peak times on NTL for months and months. After spending ages going through all the usual crap I'd tried 10 times already (plugging directly into the modem, powering off modem and machine bla bla) they sent out an engineer who was like "this is fine, could have been fixed by some work going on this week". But of course they only come during working hours when the local network isn't saturated, so it's not so bad then.

Next time I tried sending a web note including a series of ping stats in a text file and got a crappy generic reply telling me all this nonsense about how to boost download speeds, reboot pc, check for viruses blah blah blah. Basically completely ignoring my (very specific) complaint.

Final straw was when I got another engineer visit arranged and he never showed.

I came to the conclusion that unless you are getting very bad download speeds or connection problems (can't login etc) then NTL don't give a damn. Ping/PL issues which are almost certainly caused by the local UBR or whatever being overloaded do not concern them which is why I changed to ADSL instead.

It's a shame because when cable works, it's very very good (sub 10ms ping and constant 1200k/sec). Just if you happen to live in the wrong area, you're ****ed.

so basicly im screwed. Here are my problems:

VERY slow downloads
Occasional Random Disconnects from the internet
Very Slow Internet
Sometimes web pages dont loads
Run some tests and im getting major packet loss.

They should help for all that shouldnt they?

this is a very old thread, but im getting the exact same problems and it seems to be getting worse.

I wanted to buy a new MMORPG but i dont think i can now because it wont work properly and take days to update, my ps3 online is terrible now, takes me 4-5 hours (or overnight) to get new updates etc. Pages are reguarly not loading just generally very crap and slow.

Are there any ISP's we could change to for a good price, but still fast with good download speeds and no limit with how much you download?
