Packet Sniffer

I'm looking for a solution to find out where bandwidth is being used at a clients site, my first thought is to pop a packet sniffer in between the wan port.

I have hardware to build an x86 machine to do this but what would be the best way? Just windows and wireshark or something more comprehensive?

Laptop, live linux USB stick and tcpdump would probably suit my needs.

Depends on how happy you are with command line. Else Wireshark is a good piece of software.

Seems like PRTG ticks the boxes, set it up this afternoon and its going on to a live network tomorrow, should be interesting
