That could be right.

For a true indication of your placing and what is working I would try SEOmoz.org . Best tool I have ever used for SEO. Shows you everything you can imagine.

As said above, Yoast is a great tool to sort out your keywords, meta and on site data.

Also mentioned above is long tail. Focus your criteria on true search data. Think like a consumer, how would you search for you? These are generally easier to rank with.

Setup a Google webmaster account it'll help you sort out all the technical on site SEO such as crawl errors, duplicate title or header tags, 404 errors etc..

You'll also be able to track your average position for key search terms.

Once you've sorted out the technical stuff, you can then start adding content, and/or look at external seo.
